We're married! *happy bounce*
So here's how it went down.
For most brides, the enormity of what's going to happen hits them several months in advance of the wedding, assuming it's not shotgun (which ours wasn't). When did it hit me? About halfway up the aisle. All of a sudden I started shaking. I wasn't nervous at all - I know that Phil's the one I want to wake up with on my 80th birthday - it was just that reality had asserted itself with such a thud that I was glad my dad was there holding me up. Someone said that my flowers were visibly shaking and when the minister handed me the paper with my vow written on it, I couldn't read it at first because my hands were trembling so badly. Then Phil took the other corner and held it steady. He's my rock. The most amazing thing is that despite how suddenly frazzled I was, Phil was standing perfectly still, looking straight into my eyes, and smiling the entire time.
I don't know how many of you know this, but Phil has Tourette Syndrome. No, he doesn't swear uncontrollably. That's only about 5% of Tourette cases, but the media loves it. He usually snaps his head to the side, rolls his shoulder, or throws is arm out straight. That day, his eyelids didn't even flutter. He held my hand and my heart steady throughout the entire ceremony.
Back down the aisle, I finally regained myself. Everything was done and now all we had to do was enjoy ourselves. And did we! The reception was one big party! It was so funny when the DJ played the Macarena and while all of the young people sat and complained that this dance had gone out in 8th grade, Phil's aunts and uncles in their 40's, 50's and 60's all hit the dance floor. The even looked like they knew what they were doing until the first turn. A chocolate lab got in at one point (it is a farm, after all) and his nose was about an inch from the cake when
elfgirlmchan, my Maid of Honor, swooped in to save the day, luring him back outside with a piece of her sandwich. Someone even got a picture of the little rascal, just not at that moment. And then there was
Cotton-Eyed Joe. M-chan and I were the only ones doing it, but people seemed to enjoy it. We only did the kicks, not the spins. I wasn't ready to try those in my wedding dress. I probably would have fallen all over her. I came close several times as it was. After that, Phil and her mom were both immediately off to get us some water (we put a lot more energy into it than the kids in the video did).
Obviously more happened than just what I've described here, but at least it gives you an idea of what it was like. It was a wonderful day. Over a year of planning went into it and even though a few details weren't exactly perfect, I wouldn't have changed a thing.
