When they find the warehouse Tuesday morning, Starsky keeps his word and reaches for the handset.
Waiting for back-up, Hutch sees a flickering afterimage of what they'd been, running, guns drawn, young enough to believe in their own invincibility. Hot-shots. Hot-headed. Careless. Grinning.
Playing cowboys and indians, only with an adrenaline kick you wouldn't believe.
It's all fun and games until...
The black-and-white pulls up behind them and Hutch recognizes Mandersen, an old-guard beat-cop closing in on sixty-five, with another of his painfully clean-cut greenhorns, who are all eager and earnest and spit-polished shoes.
Mandersen lost his partner years ago.
