Excuse my ignorance, but what does 'gen' signify? I know 'het' is M/F, and 'slash' is same-sex pairing... Is 'gen' either, as in 'I'll read whatever's going, I don't restrict myself to one sort'?

General, in this context, usually just implies no pairing, or that the pairing's so far on the back burner that it doesn't matter that much to the story.

Ah, I see. Gotcha. Hmm, I think I usually read 'gen', in that case, but it does depend on the fic and the fandom. I mean, Saiyuki fic tends to be mainly slash or Suefic, and there's no way I'm subjecting myself to the latter thank you very much, and one of the pairings is practically canon anyway. I would also read het fic where it made sense in a fandom - so, say, a fic about Aragorn wooing Arwen, or Tuor and Idril or something similar. Frankly, if it makes sense and is well written I'll happily try anything, though usually I tend to avoid something where the main focus is a pairing just cos unless it's very well written, romance is not really my bag, as it were. :)

I have a complicated answer. I'm interested in the dynamics between male characters, but I don't care whether the relationships between them are slashy or platonic, as long as they're interesting. Slash offers more intimate relationships, but gen often offers more believable relationships. In theory, I should have no preference between slash and gen, but in practice I usually prefer slash because it's guaranteed to explore character dynamics, whereas genfic often doesn't bother.

As a rule, porn doesn't really interest me at all, no matter the pairing -- but if I'm going to read porn for some reason, it will always be m/m. I don't think there are exceptions... I like some het pairings (Denethor/Finduilas, for instance), but only as long as the girls keep their panties on. ;)

That was supposed to say "a slightly complicated answer." D'oh.
