How I learned to stop worrying and love my hoopty
So, between the front tires/radiator/holes OT3 my car went through last week and the dog bite to the face, the past few days have been... interesting. So, to get away from that, a brief introduction to the fandoms meme:
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
I Came For: The giant talking animals and angsty Numenoreans
I Stay For: Giant talking animals and angsty Numenoreans, of course! Oh, and there're dwarves and elves and a detailed genetic and political history that are made of win, too.
Run Screaming from: All right, to be honest, a wee bit more in-depth characterization wouldn't kill the Silmarillion, but that's what fandom's for.
Fandom: Harry Potter
I Came For: Quirky Nerdgirls
I Stay For: the dog men
Run Screaming from: The chest monster
Fandom: Discworld
I Came For: Rincewind running away
I Stay For: Vetinari, the Watch, and Nanny Ogg's musical numbers.
Run Screaming from: I'm sorry, you can't. Discworld infects your brain, even if you're like me and couldn't get a serious fanfic out of it to save your life.
Fandom: Doctor Who
I Came For: The Daleks and the scarf
I Stay For: the timewarp crack
Run Screaming from: rabid companionshipping and the sacrifice of the week. (I do enjoy the ballsiness of the fandom, but I can't watch too many of the new series back to back.)
Fandom: Firefly
I Came For: The tightpants
I Stay For: Mandarin curses
Run Screaming from: the movie trailer, even though the film itself is shiny.
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Come for: Atheistic bastards. (Seriously. They're snarky love, even the more religious ones.)
Stay For: The kickass women. (See my icon, for starters. Romantic subplot or no, they've got stuff going on.)
Run Screaming from: The spelling variations. (It's not a complete turn-off, but it makes for headaches when trying to write a fic.) Also, beware of some serious continuity differences between anime and manga that make a manga fan wonder why they listed King twice in the character listings.
Fandom: Wolf's Rain
I Came For: There was a video featuring Blue and Hige that had me wondering how the crap they survived all this... and then there was Tsume's pants. 'Nuff said.
I Stay For: The human element. (How many animes feature divorcees in major roles? And Quent is cooler than you might think.) Oh, and did I mention ho!yay that's practically, if not out and out canon?
Run Screaming from: Spoilers: Rocks fall, everyone dies. and 99% of the fanfic is crap, especially on the Pit. Just warning you.
Fandom: Star Wars
I Came For: The lightsabers
I Stay For: Han and Leia, made of awesome by themselves, added together = total sweetness.
Run Screaming from: EU Sues, Anakin's whininess in Episode II, and the canon discontinuities.
Fandom: Animorphs
I Came For: The animals
I Stay For: The xenobiology. It may not make 100% logical sense, but they try for cultural differences, at least.
Run Screaming from: Rocks fall, everyone dies, six years later.
Fandom: Blackadder
I Came For: The snarky insanity of the cunning plans
I Stay For: Snarky reincarnating insanity of cunning plans
Run Screaming from: Although it's perhaps not quite as overwhelming as certain other fandoms, I do seem to have a thing for the series with RFED endings, don't I?
