I admit I had a bit of a debate with myself whether I really wanted to rewatch this one, and while I'm glad I decided to, I'm still not quite sure how to feel about it. For being a Ben Steed ep it at least has the unexpected decency to imply that the sexism is actually a bad thing (gosh, really?) Portraying misogynic characters and society needn't necessarily have been a bad thing in itself either - if it hadn't been for how in this case all the female characters are either helpless victims and/or of little or no consequence for the plot. :-/ Otoh Doran's hatred of women actually seems rather insightful on one level (as in not trying to blame rape on uncontrollable sexually desire etc), creepy as it is
( ... )
I really wish I could wave a wand and transplant all of Vila's scenes from this ep into a better story! (Although how many times does the poor dwt end up sprawled on the floor in this ep - and at least twice from people who are nominally supposed to be on his side
( ... )
Aw, damn, I was going to say that I love that moment where he visibly slips on the mask of laughing with the rest, but then both your and emmzzi's comments made me want to rewatch all the Vila bits again, and I did, and AARGH, I realised that I've been so distracted by Vila's face (this is getting to be a problem!) that I've totally missed what it is that he's actually doing with his hands in that scene -
HE IS RECALIBRATING HIS TELEPORT BRACELET
*joyous headdesking*
So he was definitely preparing to go back to the Liberator. He just wasn't - like he said - going to let Tarrant shove him around. And also may not have trusted Tarrant to get the recalibration right and/or not use Vila as a guinea pig to test whether he had. And perhaps just wanting to make sure his new "mates" would at least not get shot down by his old ones. And also Doran only got really creepy after their meeting with Tarrant, so there's room for second thoughts.
...sorry. Realising this just made me a lot happier with Vila's part in this ep.
"The end-of-series budget shortage heads for critical mass as our heroes have computer problems..."
I have a credibility gap with the duplication machine. I am not sure what kind of matter it is making things from but I can't see a source of carbon going in anywhere.
Oh, Ben Steed. Vapid women with clinging dresses again. I am dissappoint.
I feel deeply for Vila here; so longing for companionship, so aware the blokes are mentally beneath him. The Vila/Servalan exchange is just lovely! And to think she's a "gift" from Doran....
I also like the little protective moment where Cally warns Avon off the apple; but he eats it anyway. Much cuteness.
Thsi line cracks me up every single time. Every. Time.
I think they said the machine usually used "rocks" as source material... so maybe limestone? Unless it's taking things apart beyond atom level, in which case I suppose it could use anything... (Not sure that explanation should necessarily fill anyone's credibility gap, though. ;-)
"Yes. That is how I reasoned you would look."
*everyone moves slightly back from Avon*
It would have been a rather silly line under any circumstances, but as it is it really amounts to rather epic fail, doesn't it. *g* (And it wasn't even post-production, so PD had to actually see the thing while saying it, poor man.)
