Uncomfortable on so many levels. Actually the first scenes between Dayna and Justin are well acted, I think - or would have been if this had been a drama aiming to be disturbing by dealing with someone's childhood crush on an authority figure, with hints of abuse. Not exactly what I want from B7 though. And, of course, once Servalan gets involved in the plot everything goes down the drain very quickly, including any serious themes.

And as if that's not enough there's the horrible bullying scene on the Scorpio, the way they all join in against Vila. It makes me queasy to watch. Though at least Vila does not come across as particularly submissive. They can make him do what they want, but they can't make him think that he deserves it.

VILA [to Tarrant]: I don't see why I should be punished for your guilty conscience. *gives Avon a grim look ( ... )

I do like the upgraded mutoids, but then, I love all mutoids!

I suspect Vila is the only one with a cnsistently enough written character to be able to challenge, everyone else has space fever.

On checking, the episode was written for Cally, which is less icky. Would have been better with her, or Soolin - and it might have explained her cool nature toward men? Hmm. Wonder if anyone has written a fix it for that?

Gosh, sorry to be so late commenting!

So, Animals. Og and his kin are pretty poor special effects...

I guess how you feel about this episode depends in part on how you feel about May/September (or maybe November) romances. I'm not squicked by it per se. I find Justin not to my personal taste, but then 95% of people aren't either.

What is tragic is that get get a Dayna backstory episode and it's mainly romantic tosh. I find it unbelievable she wouldn't want to discuss her family with one of the last people who knew them. The "once over lightly" on genetic engineering is dissapointing; so much potential to say something deeper.

Do I really, REALLY believe Avon is looking for scientists to join them? I guess, maybe. If so though I might have made more of an effort with Plaxton last episode. He's more likely to try and defeat the federation with brains than by rabble rousing a la Blake though

Servalan and the chair of mind bending dub con creation? Best skimmed over....

Rather like with Blake and his cousin, it's not their current ages that bothers me as much as their implied past relationship. I'm not sure how old Dayna is supposed to be here (she was happy to refer to herself as a "girl" rather than a woman in S3 though) but it sounds like it was a good while ago that Justin was tutoring her (they say the research on Bucol II started six years before the galactic war, so presumably it was before that?)

Good point.

Well, he's still doing it in the next ep, at least... And as for Plaxton, he didn't object, or even hesitate to bring her along when she asked him to - perhaps that was what sparked the idea in the first place?

fair point on past age. I have not done the maths either but it seems likely to be icky!

Someone really should have thought about how this would look once shuffled across to a different character! Ych a fi.

Interesting that Dayna and Tarrant are 'Out alone' on this one, at least at first. Wonder why? Others' day off?!

I wanted to give them alml a good kick on Vila's behalf! by right Tarrant should have been down in the muck - as Avon points out he was the one who broke it!

Servelan spends a lot of the episode clearing tall conclusions in a single bound. Ardus is manhandled abt even before she suspects him of being suspicious of her, and to conclude from the fact that Dayna, who hates her, is lying that obviously she loves the bloke, ages older than her, that she's lying about is a massive stretch!

Another one which could have been good and isn't. Nothing wrong with the basic plot it's just cast and implemented dreadfully.

In the next ep, when it's Tarrant and Vila instead, Tarrant says that it's because it's "their turn", so apparently they have some kind of work rotation going on. I suppose that makes sense, now that they've got a base - no use in risking all their lives if they don't have to.
