Barack Obama was prompted to deliver a speech today on racial issues in America, largely because of the furor over comments his longtime preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright has made suggesting the US brought the 9/11 attacks on itself.

I think the speech was a smart way to answer the pointing fingers of the Right. Even if something else comes out...it is really already covered.

I think you've really hit the nail on the head, Chris. And people like Hanratty keep white people afraid by playing up the scary black man. But now, instead of wanting to rape white women, scary black men want to take over the country and disenfranchise white folk. It's the easiest thing in the world to say someone is "blinded by ideology" when one says something you disagree with. Far easier than raising points and arguments to refute what they said. Of course, assuming that someone doesn't have the capacity to think for themselves and is somehow "blinded" by a particular political point of view isn't the best way to engage in respectful political discourse, IMHO. I assume that right-wingers don't appreciate being told that they are just sheep blindly following whatever spews forth from the lips of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, and that they are incapable of original thought. I don't want to speak for right-wingers, so I'll just assume that to be true ( ... )
