The vegetable garden

The cunning plan is to slowly convert the vegetable garden (about 35'x50', fenced in and in almost entirely full sun all the time) to raised beds.  There are two gates to the vegetable garden, one of them is a is a "normal" fence gate (came with the house and its fenced in back yard), the other one is a piece of fencing between two gate posts (we ( Read more... )

Oooh, that sounds really nice. :) I've heard of growing a small herb garden in pots, and I kind of wanted to try that (possibly those clay pots with all the holes?) but I haven't a clue how to start. I was thinking of putting them on the stoop by my front door since we haven't dug out the back yet. But I am not sure this is a good idea. What do you think? I could possibly find room in the house, but that may require buying more furniture... almost every flat surface on the first floor near a window has a plant on it. >.

If the front stoop is as sunny as you say, then that would be a great place, unless you expect dogs or cats to mess with your herbage. Having them on the inside, on a window sill is always a possibility, but a lot of times they don't do quite as well as the ones on the outside. Most herbs love lots of sun, some heat, occasional water, but with good drainage etc, so a lot of time the inside of the house is a bit "too cushy" for them. You can grow herbs in the clay pots you talk about very easily and with lots of success (those pots are usually referred to as "Strawberry Pots", btw). I'll tell you how to do that tonight or on Wednesday, if you want. I can even give you some starter plants for some things, when you decide to experiment with it.
