Speaking from experience: yes yes oh god YES. Of course, archaeological digs may be slightly specific circumstances, as you get a group of people who are not only working together, but also eating all meals together, living together, and even sleeping together (usually in the sense of sharing a room, but almost inevitably there is at least one instance of the other meaning of sleeping together as well). Add in the factor of being in a rural location, where typically one, maybe two, people speak the local language with any fluency, and that there tends to be a lack of regular access to any source of outside information, including no regular TV, radio, internet, telephones, or newspapers. "Slightly crazy" is the nice way of putting it.
