Oh. Oh, yes. This is excellent. Subtle and with just the right amount of tragedy and bite. This is exactly the kind of post season one scene that I want.
Thanks! One of my dearest hopes for season two is that they'll have Merlin be changed by what he's done instead of just hitting the narrative reset button. As shows do.
Oh, yes. I'm continually frustrated by the lack of consequences for Merlin, either tangible or emotional.
I keep reminding myself that it's meant to be a family show, and that a lot of what I want to see simply wouldn't be judged appropriate, but when you have so many characters existing in shades of grey, then why waste them with an absolute good/evil dichotomy?
There are a frustrating lack of consequences for Merlin. And yet when I go back and watch the early episodes I'm always shocked at how much Merlin has changed. The person they show first coming to Camelot could not and would not have done what Merlin does in 1x13. So while I would like more specific fallout, I'm willing to grant that Merlin is at least deeply changed by the things he's done.
Thanks! The simplest reading, and the one the title implies is Nimueh's ghost; but the sadder point is that Merlin has already killed so many people for Arthur, and will kill yet more, that it doesn't have to be Nimueh.
Like Uther, he's going to end up with a lot of ghosts, not all of whom will rest.
Yay, a like-minded person! Because I think that there are interesting similarities between them, something ruthless and vengeful. I can't see Arthur ever laying waste to an entire people to avenge the death of someone he loved; but Merlin might.
that Arthur just doesn't let himself know about Merlin
Exactly. I think it must be so strange for Merlin, who knows Arthur and can see so clearly that Arthur hardly knows him at all. And the more Merlin changes--is changed by what he does for Arthur--the wider this gap is going to stretch.
At what point is Arthur going to start letting himself ask questions about all these things surrounding Merlin that don't add up?

And here I thought I was the only one interested in the similarities between Merlin and Uther.
