Oh my lord. (Er, no pun intended.) How is it that you can take a basic premise (wing!fic) that I have no interest in, then turn it in to something that pushes every one of my buttons?

Thanks! I still think that not being into wings, visually, makes it much easier. In fact, I'm sort of the last person I'd ever have expected to write wing!fic. Fandom is weird.

*glee* I loved your description so much--how Arthur becomes Merlin's one true faith; I'm just so glad to have captured something of that... that focus and keenness and divine hunger you implied. Merlin's idolatry.

I am so happy that I managed to be articulate enough to inspire something like that!
But honestly when I first watched a couple of episodes it was all I could think about, even as early as in Valiant, when Merlin looks at him it's both sensual and so, so pious. Arthur is the person Merlin kills for without even batting an eye-lid. I remember watching Gates of Avalon with my mom and when Merlin didn't exactly mess around with Sophia and Aulfric and both of us being like 'whoa scary', because sometimes Merlin's devotion borders on religious fanatism.

Exactly. That's what shocked me as I was writing this, how for all this is wing!fic AU, on some level I think this must be how Merlin feels, this sort of layered passion, the sensual and the ethereal. He's devoted to Arthur, to the man and the Future King and the deeply flawed person in a way that is terrifyingly without limits, whether it's telling him off for being a prat or killing his enemies in cold blood; devoted in the way of a man who has found his calling.

And I would love to see that moment when Arthur first gets a glimpse of this, the revelation it would be.
