Emperor Joker doesn't get enough love. Action Comics 770
I know that this has been referenced before in other posts (like the one where Bats fires missiles at Supes), but I don't think anyone's posted this utterly mind bending piece of cracktastic JOY. It's a nine issue story arc that revolves around Superman in a world gone mad... And it's an AWESOME tale.
There are 8 issues of insanity before this one. Long story short: Mxysptlk loaned his powers to the Joker. Practically all of them. The Joker has remade the universe in his image and it's up to Clark to stop him. But Clark doesn't remember that he's Superman. Mxy shows up and after much insanity Clark gets his memory back, denies Joker's reality and becomes Superman. Now he's off to confront the Joker and save the world!
He doesn't do so well. Batman however, even though the Joker has pulled a matrix stunt on his mouth is as utterly resourceful as ever.
Bear with me. That was as painful for me as it was for you. Batman advising Superman to kill? Something's very wrong here.
You have no idea.
The one constant in this world is that there's a horrible inhuman screaming every night heard round the world. Guess what that is?
Every. Single. Night. For an untold length of time. At least months. I've got to point this out. What you are seeing here is a broken Batman. A broken Batman is STILL coherent enough to use MORSE CODE. I love that man. I really do.
Now here's a bit of an aside while we find out why the Joker is doing this. He's just declared he's going to destroy the universe.
That's a darn powerful page. the Joker snaps out of it instantly and goes back to bad jokes... but you can't help but think that for just a moment he was actually telling the truth as he sees it. It's a really freaky moment.
The Joker takes things to the next level, and Mxy gives Supes a pep talk.
Ok. now that page was darn cool, but I need to point out: all that white text in the black bubbles? It's not white. It was originally grey. I had to make it white so that it was legible. There isn't a FLECK of white on that page. ...or is there? (Awesome concept by the way.)
Joker learns what we've always known:
It's all about the Batman.
And with the wrap up everything is hunky-dory.
...or not.
This is one of the single most powerful scenes I have EVER seen between Batman and Superman.
