The vodka left a trail of cool ice and alcoholic heat as it slid down her throat. Her eyes closed briefly in pleasure. There was nothing more enjoyable than a glass of vodka after a hard day at the office. Opening her eyes, she amended her earlier thought. In her line of sight stood a very handsome man and, if she had a mind to, he could do things to her that a long cold drink couldn’t. He was looking right at her and she shivered with delight. Raising an eyebrow in invitation and sliding one leg across the knee of the other in a practised provocative way, she lifted her glass and waited.  His gaze moved on, and her mouth fell open in surprise. No one turned her down.  No one! Her face burning with anger, she watched him move through the crowded bar. He was tall and lithe, graceful, as he navigated the throng of happy drinkers.  Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed another man turn away and head for the bathrooms. Handsome followed. She sighed, her annoyance draining away. Typical. The good-looking ones were always gay.  Turning back to the barman, she ordered a refill. Fresh drink in hand, she pivoted back to scan the crowd. Perhaps there was another out there that could scratch her itch. Handsome was back, making his way through the crowd to the bar.

She blinked. That was quick. Too quick. What was he up to?

Without realising it, she had put out her hand and touched him when he came next to her. He turned, real fast, and she recoiled from him. Close up, his features seemed sharper, meaner than she had first thought. The twist of his lips was cruel, matching the ruthless glint in his eyes. Surely, his heart was made of stone, with nothing good residing inside. She shivered, shrinking back, wanting to be anywhere than there.

Her mouth, dry, worked until she was able to stutter an apology. “Sorry, I thought…”

And just like magic, the lines of his face softened, his eyes gentled until he wasn’t the demon she had just seen.

“I’m sorry,” he said, looking away and behind her. He showed impossibly white teeth in a huge grin then, and a look she had seldom seen lit up his eyes. It was love and it was directed towards the petite blonde that had appeared beside him.

“I leave you alone for five minutes and I find you chatting someone up.” The blonde’s eyes sparkled with mischief when she glanced her way for a moment.

A deprecating shrug shook wide shoulders as he asked, “Everything alright?”

“Yeah. People should watch where they’re going. He walked right into my stake.”

Did she hear right? Steak? As far as she knew the only food in the establishment were peanuts, sitting in bowls.

“And not a hair out of place,” the blonde continued with a smile, patting her golden locks.

“Drink, before we move on?” he asked.

“Please. And can we get some food? Slaying always makes me hungry.”

The chuckle that crawled out of his throat was as sexy as all get out. But what was the blonde saying about slaying? What the hell was that about? She decided that she had had enough to drink. She was tired and needed to get to bed.

She slid off her stool, hearing, as she slipped away, his voice saying, “I thought that made you horny.”
