I have passed this on to my mother in law, she is a bit of a fountain of knowledge about these sorts of things...will let you know if she comes up with the goods.
Do you have access to a dryer? We inherited one, and I've used it over the winter. I have been quite astounded at how _soft_ things are! (MCN and towelling nappies, particularly.) Even if it's only an hour to finish off a mostly dry load, it seems to really soften them up.
If it's actual dust, only lots and lots of rinsing is going to get it out. If it's just hardened with line-drying like towels get hard, a dryer tumble (as fe2h2o says) should do it. If it's washing-powder residue (most people use far too much), a strip wash with washing up liquid and copious hot rinsing might do it. (Not in a front loader!)
Lux soap flakes and a vinegar rinse can soften fabric, but there are two downsides. One is that the soap can leave a residue on the fabric that reduces absorption, important for nappies and towels but not much else. Two is that the tallow soap and vinegar leave their own odourous residues. Some people like them; me, I can't stand the smell of tallow soap these days. Another option could be to try washing in a good dose of bicarb. No smell.
I'm back! Mother in law didn't have an immediate answer but has since been able to inform me (and you) that Cuddly ultra sensitive is basically without scent. Even in the bottle when she gave me a sniff it was very low odour and apparently when it has gone through the wash you can hardly tell. It's the white one on the far right here http://www.colgate.com.au/app/Colgate/AU/FabricCare/ProductRecommender/FabricSoftener/PDPs.cvsp?product=Cuddly
