Repo! The Genetic Opera: A mini-review

Nov 17, 2008 00:58

Um, wow.

I won't say Repo! The Genetic Opera was good, but it was awesome.

Think Rocky Horror meets Blade Runner with a whole lot of Goth costuming and stylistic sensibilities, mix in some Jekyll and Hyde and Sweeney Todd, have Troma film it all (with some stylistic touches from silent movies like Metropolis), and cast Anthony Stewart Head in the main male singing part. And Sarah Brightman in the second most important female singing part (and Paris Hilton is actually really well used).

Oh yeah, and cameos by people like Joan Jett. And the lead villain was played by a very weirdly-cast Paul Sorvino.

The whole thing is a muddled mess, but has enough HEY COOL! in it that the THAT'S AWFUL is just fun. And the mess reminded me of a whole lot of other goth productions, so it really ends up working.

In its way, it would go well with Heavy Metal, too (in that it has aspirations that are both pretentious and trashy in their own ways).

Todd Bob sez cheggitout.
