I've mostly given up on the meter score itself and just skim the actual reviews - even looking over the summaries, you can usually get a good idea what the movie's strengths and weaknesses are, even if the reviewers differ on how the factors balanced out in the end.

This is especially true when you've got a movie that's got pronounced flaws and strengths (e.g. Let the Right One In, which has an intriguing variation on the current vampire trend, some cool (if sometimes understated) character exploration, a risky mix of dark humor and horror, and very leisurely pacing, especially in the first half). If the critic is conflicted, that can go either way tomato-wise - but a lot of those same observations show up repeatedly in the details, at which point you can decide if somnolent pacing will be a dealbreaker for you.

I sometimes pay attention to friends whose movie taste I know, but for the most part I disregard reviews altogether. Because, at the end of the night, I'm the one deciding on if I like something or not.
