I meant to write this last week but I forgot. Steve's Place Pizza Pasta and Grill closed one year ago last Wednesday. That night was almost surreal. Ian called me and said I needed to come in to help him close the store. I got there, had a short meeting with Roni and Jesse and helped them close the store permanently. We took all the food we wanted including a couple kegs. Mine was taken on my behalf because I could not fit it in my car (unfortunately, I did not get to go to the party in which it was tapped but that's not important). The thing was, I had been meaning to get away from there. I knew that it wasn't going anywhere but I figured that while I was in school why did I need to go somewhere? I just needed something that would let me go to all my classes and make enough to survive. I wanted to go but never got around to it because for all its frustrations I did like it and the people I worked with.
Nowadays I do data entry in a little cave. Its hours are always the same which is convenient but much harder to get days off. It's predictable which can be nice even though it takes all the fun out of it. I make more money and it's nice to get a feel for a corporate/office atmosphere in a forgiving environment (read as: with a forgiving manager). But man, sometimes I miss the exhilaration of of a busy night. Of working my ass off to make sure that every person who stepped in the door had good food and a good night as far as I could control.
At this point I feel Steve's is something to be looked at on fondly. For the most part I did enjoy it. Or, at least, I enjoyed my crew and I enjoyed being able to see the fruits of my labor as people could come up to me and tell me their food was great. It seems somehow wrong to think that two and a half years of my life, good times and bad, could be summed up in so few words. But that's probably just me romanticizing things...
I kinda doubted Steve's would open back up when it closed. Even after I was doing other things and knew I wouldn't go back, I kinda hoped it would open just because it was Steve's. I was told that someday there will be another Steve's Carmichael but never again Steve's at Five Points.
So it goes. And off I go with the rest of my life.
