wow, i had no idea caterers cost that much!!!! i guess i assumed but never really thought about it. :/

i wonder if my parents would ever consider renting out their backyard for shindigs...plenty of space but not enough parking i suppose! they'd probably have to get some sort of floor in that people can dance on and a tent...hmm...

My mum did a metric ton of research about affordable weddings when I got married. She chewed my ear off about it, then got all sentimental and wanted stuff, granted, but I still have a lot of the tricks and tips in my brain if you ever want to chat.

The wedding industry is a HUGE scam. There's lots of ways to have a beautiful wedding on the cheap. You just need to be creative and do some footwork.

It is expensive. I was shooting for total budget 15,000 or under. I did make it under, but it is true, you need to shop around. I didn't do many frills. The DJ was the bestman and that was his gift, although we did cover his expenses. My advise is decide what you really want before you look at all the options and then stick with what you set out. It is easy to get taken in by all the things offered.
The big ticket items I found are: venue and catering, DJ, and Photography/Vidiography.
Good Luck! If you can don't let it spoil the experience. Planning a wedding should be fun. I know we had a blast.

The person who commented about the wedding industry a 'scam' ... well, probably? Rachel from LOFT would be a good person to inquire about cutting costs but still having something beautiful... but not at the moment I wouldn't ask; she's got a full plate ( ... )

Apparently the average cost of a wedding in the United States is $27,000. So if you can do it for under $10,000, you're way ahead.

I like theknot.com for all kinds of wedding advice and information and ideas (including how to do things on a budget). Check it out.
