Chapter 2
I See You
The Talon Apartment
March 2009 (Ten months ago)
“Peace offering for missing your party.”
A pajama-clad Chloe grinned up at him as he stood in her doorway. “The casualties of being a hero,” she said, waving away his apology. “Not everyone could have punched through Zatanna’s whammy and saved the day.”
Ah, but she was wrong there. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” he pointed out softly. “Thank you for reminding me who I really am.”
“Yeah, I guess rebooting your Superhero OS rekindled the Chloe fire,” she said with a nod. “Looks like hero support isn’t just a day job anymore. And for that…” she clutched the brown paper bag out of his hands with a twinkle in her eye. “…we eat bagels.”
He couldn’t help but smile himself as she padded across the room to slide a plate out of the cupboard. Maybe it was selfish of him, but having Chloe back full time felt like old times again. Jimmy…he sighed. He couldn’t speak for Chloe, but as far as he was concerned, that entire relationship had been a mistake from start to finish, and he was personally pleased that it was finally over.
“So, do you remember everything?” she asked as she returned to the sofa and sat down.
“You mean about being Johnny Average?” He nodded. “Yeah; it did feel as though a weight had been lifted.”
“It must have been hard to harness up again,” she said empathically.
He gave it some thought. “To be honest, a life without responsibility kind of felt…empty,” he answered at last. “This is who I am, Chloe. Every morning, I wake up with a purpose.”
“Yeah, you’re not the only one who saw the world through irony-coloured glasses,” she said wryly, taking a sip of coffee.
“Why did you wait so long to tell me what was going on?” he asked quietly.
She gave a bagel a listless nibble before putting down with a deep sigh.
“Let’s face it, Clark; my life has been a little less than desirable lately,” she replied morosely. “I mean, what with Jimmy, and the divorce and everything…”
He winced, remembering the not-so-nice things he’d said about her, thinking he was speaking to her cousin. “Chloe…”
She shrugged. “It’s okay. And I can’t deny that there is an appeal to the dynamic duo’s weekly adventures.”
That used to be him and Chloe, he realised with chagrin. And to be honest, he really missed having her around. Walking into the Daily Planet just wasn’t the same when she wasn’t there. It didn’t feel right. Lois was okay, but…
“Well, you haven’t missed much. And for what it’s worth, it just isn’t the same at the Daily Planet without you.”
She snorted. “Ha. With Lois sitting across the desk from you, I find that hard to believe. But it’s nice of you to say that, though.”
“Have you thought about coming back to the Planet, though?” he asked. “Lois said she’d given you an application form.”
She swirled her coffee for along while before answering. “I’ve decided that the DP’s not what I want right now,” she said softly. “Maybe some time in the future I’ll think about heading back there, once I’ve completed my journalism degree. I want to do things properly this time.”
“Well, as long as you’re sure,” he said.
She nodded and raised her mug. “I’m sure. Here’s to new beginnings.”
He lifted his mug to hers. “To new beginnings.”
Their mugs clinked softly as they toasted to the future, although Clark observed that for all Chloe’s tough talk, she still didn’t look particularly happy.
He couldn’t blame her, really. What with losing her beloved job, and Brainiac infecting her, to the breakdown of her marriage with Jimmy... well. To say she’d had the Year from Hell would be putting it extremely lightly. Then to hear him talking about her behind her back would have been even more salt in the wound, and he was thoroughly ashamed of himself for having been so insensitive about her.
Sure, she’d brushed it off, claiming that they’d had a job to do, but that wouldn’t have done anything to lessen the sting of having your best friend bad-mouth you to somebody else when they think you’re not there.
She glanced over in the act of lifting her coffee cup to her mouth, and he gave her an apologetic smile. She grinned back, losing concentration momentarily as the hot beverage missed her mouth and headed straight for her tank top.
“Eek!” she shrieked.
Clark didn’t hesitate. He moved into superspeed, watching the hot liquid spread through the garment in slow motion. His only thought was to stop it from reaching and scalding her skin.
Quick as a flash, he yanked her top of and flung it far away and held onto her upper arms, gently blowing cool air onto her chest just in case she’d gotten scalded.
He heard her inhale sharply, and suddenly he realised that in his haste to save her from a coffee burn, he hadn’t paused to think whether or not she was wearing a bra…and it turned out she wasn’t.
So he was blowing cold air directly onto her nipples.
Oh, God. He was staring at Chloe’s nipples. And because of his gentle blowing, they were hard and stiff, thrusting out insistently in front of his face.
He swallowed hard, unable to tear his gaze away. Chloe’s heartbeat sped up and thumped loudly in his ears, and his hands tightened on her arms.
“Clark…?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
He had no idea what she was asking for, or what she meant to say to him, or how they’d gone from innocently having breakfast to…to this. But there was only one command his brain was issuing right now, and he was pretty much powerless to resist it.
Still gripping her arms, he pulled her forward slightly and brushed his tongue over one tight nipple.
***
Chloe gasped, and her heated flesh tightened further at his gentle caress. Clark instantly felt lightheaded as his blood rushed to groin, making him stiffen painfully. He shifted his head and licked her other nipple, lingering longer and stroking the hard nub over and over with his tongue, until Chloe shift restlessly on the couch.
“More,” she pleaded breathlessly. “Please…”
That was all the invitation he needed. His lips surrounded her rosy nipple, sucking deeply. Chloe cried out and clutched his arms, arching her back in ecstasy.
He continued to pleasure her with his mouth, turning his attention to her other breast and sucking hard on the lush tip. Her back arched sharply and her hand tightened in his hair, turning him on even further. Chloe was incredibly responsive, and the fact that he was the one making her feel so good filled him with a smug sense of satisfaction.
But she was growing impatient, judging by the way she grabbed hold of the hem of his shirt and yanked it upward. Clark let go of her arms and lifted his so that she could pull the t-shirt off, which she did and flung unceremoniously into a corner.
Now that they were both naked above the waist, he had a burning need to feel her against him, skin to skin. He pulled her down so that they were both kneeling on the carpet, and held her flush against him so that they were connected, chest to chest.
For long moments they just stared at each other, desire evident in both their gazes.
“Clark, what are we doing?” she finally whispered.
Dimly, Clark heard warning bells going off in some distant part of his head. This was Chloe, his best friend and the person he trusted and depended on most in the world. Sleeping with her could give rise to all sorts of complications, and could change their relationship forever, either for better or for worse.
It was the worse aspect that had him worried. He didn’t want to lose her; she meant a lot more to him than a passing one-nighter…and there was also the unsavoury fact that she was, technically, still married to another man. If there was ever a time for him to back away from her, it was now.
But as he gazed back at her, he knew, deep down, that anything she had ever felt for Jimmy was not only long gone, but also paled in comparison to what was buzzing between the two of them now; what had always buzzed between them.
“I don’t know, Chloe,” he said raggedly, stroking her hair. “I don’t know what it is we’re doing, but I do know that I don’t want us to stop. Do you?”
Her pretty features clouded over for just a second, and he could see that she was turning over the same logistics in her head that he himself had just evaluated.
But damn it, he didn’t want her to think herself out of this. As far as he was concerned, they were already gone past the point of no return.
Grasping her hips, he pulled her towards him and gently ground against her so she could feel his throbbing hardness. She gasped, her eyes darkening as her pupils dilated.
“No,” she whispered.
