Chapter 2
If Dr Lola Johnson had suddenly sprouted horns and danced a jig on top of her desk, Chloe couldn’t have been more astonished.
“Pregnant?” she echoed hollowly. “But I…no, I- What?! How? How is that possible?”
Lola gave her a sardonic look and shook her head. “Really? Don’t make me ask the obvious question.”
“Lola, I - I know you must get this all the time, but seriously: I can’t be pregnant.”
The doctor sighed. “Fine, I’ll ask it. Have you been having sexual relations with your husband?” As she spoke, she took an advanced pregnancy test kit out from a nearby cupboard and began unwrapping it.
“Of course we have, regularly - but we’re using protection!”
“Ah yes, the pill.” She dipped the tip of the wand into the sample and narrowed her eyes at the display box in the corner. “Anything else?”
“We don’t use condoms, but I’ve been on the pill ever since the start of our relationship,” she confirmed.
The doctor arched a slim, dark brow. “Ever miss any?”
Chloe opened her mouth to deny, it but then it dawned on her.
“Well…yes,” she admitted. “Just once, the night of our wedding.”
Lola smiled. “Let me guess…eleven weeks ago?”
“Yes, give or take a day,” she replied, surprised. “How did you-?”
Lola turned the wand around and handed it to her. There, in the corner, was a tiny screen that read Pregnant: 11wks +/-3 days very clearly.
“Oh, God,” Chloe said lamely. “I’m…pregnant.”
Lola nodded. “Congratulations. Looks like you conceived on your wedding night.”
“But how?” she said, still in shock. “That’s impossible!”
Lola rolled her eyes, and Chloe rushed on. “I mean, it’s physically impossible. I can't have fallen pregnant then, because I took two pills the next day after to make up for the deficit. And I had a period two weeks after that!”
“Which by your own admission was unusually light,” the doctor pointed out. “It’s called spotting; it sometimes happens when the fertilised egg burrows its way into the uterine lining. Perfectly normal.”
Chloe gaped. “But --- but what about the two pills I took?”
“That never works,” Lola replied. “The human body is designed to procreate, Chloe. By missing one pill, you gave your body a 24-hour window of opportunity, and it went for it.”
“I still can’t believe this is happening,” she murmured in shock, staring at the wand. “I’m having a baby?”
“You’ll be a mommy in six months,” the doctor confirmed with a nod.
“I see.” Chloe clasped her hands together to stop them from shaking and tried to come to terms with the news she had just received.
A baby.
A baby?
Lola narrowed her eyes and tilted her head. “How do you feel about this, Chloe?”
Chloe let out a shaky breath. “I don’t know how I feel about it, to be honest,” she answered truthfully. “We didn’t plan this, at least not for a while. Oliver, he…”
He’ll be over the moon,” Lola replied with a smile. “He may have been a little wayward in his youth, but he’s always wanted a family.”
“But we were planning to wait a year-”
“Plans,” the doctor snorted. “Another word that makes me chuckle.” She started scribbling on a prescription pad, and then paused.
“You are keeping this baby, yes?”
“Of course!” Chloe exclaimed, instinctively covering her belly with her hand. “Absolutely.”
“Then you’re to start taking these folic acid supplements immediately,” she said as she tore off the top sheet of the prescription and handed it to her. “Ideally, we ask women to start taking them at the very start of pregnancy, if not before.”
“So I’m almost three months behind,” Chloe said in dismay. “Oh, no. Have I hurt my baby? Is it deprived of-?”
“Calm down, Chloe,” she reassured her. “Yes, you’re several weeks behind, but lots of women go the full 9 months with no knowledge of their pregnancy, and yet go on to have healthy babies. You’ll be fine.”
“Thank you.” Still, she was concerned that she might have inadvertently harmed her baby. She was going to have a baby. It was still a huge shock. “Um…what else do I need to know?”
“Eat lots of healthy foods,” the doctor advised. “Lots of fresh fruit and leafy vegetables to naturally detox your body. You’re pretty much past the nausea stage, but keep a box of crackers handy, just in case…”
She continued with a litany of information, pausing only to put Chloe on a scale and get her current weight. She also gathered a ton of leaflets together, scribbled a few things down on them, and handed them to her.
“This is pretty much a Cliff’s Notes version of pregnancy information, but I’d advise picking up these books immediately,” Lola said. “Any more questions?”
“Yes…earlier, you said I was past the nausea stage, but I didn’t have any nausea at all,” Chloe said. “Is that good or bad?”
The doctor paused for several seconds before finally replying.
“It could - and I say that very loosely - be indicative of a congenital defect, but that’s a very long shot,” she said. “Every woman is different, and every pregnancy is different. I had no nausea at all with my first child, and he turned out healthy and strong. My second pregnancy was a nightmare. I had morning, noon and night sickness for seven of the nine months, and was convinced it was because I was carrying a girl, but he turned out to be a boy, too…strong as ox, and sharp as a whip. So there’s no hard and fast rules where nausea’s concerned.”
She reached across the table and held Chloe’s trembling hand. “I know it’s been a lot for you to take in, and having all this information thrust on you all at once can be very daunting,” she said. “But we all feel like that at first. Now that you know, you’ll be able to read the signs of your body for what they are, and begin to bond with your baby as it’s developing.”
“Do you think there’s any cause for concern?” Chloe asked.
“Not necessarily; but since you’re so far along, and you had some spotting early on, we should schedule you in for your 12‑week scan as soon as possible,” she replied. “If you want, I can pull some strings and get you an appointment for this afternoon.”
Chloe shook her head. “No; Oliver’s away on business, and I don’t want to do the sonogram without him. We’ll see our baby together.” Our baby. God, this was really happening. “He’ll be back tonight, though; can we come in tomorrow?”
Lola scrolled through the appointments screen on her computer. “The earliest sonogram slot I have is tomorrow lunchtime; how’s that?”
“It’s perfect,” Chloe said. “He may have a meeting or something, but nothing that can’t be rescheduled.”
“All booked.” She printed off the appointment and handed it to Chloe with a smile. “Congratulations, I’ll see you both tomorrow at lunchtime. If you have any more questions - and I’m quite sure you will - feel free to call me at any time, okay? You have my direct number.”
“I do.” Chloe got to her feet, unsurprised to see that her knees were shaky. “Thanks, Lola.”
“You’re welcome. Congratulations again; see you both tomorrow.”

Chloe spent the rest of the day in a daze.
Pregnant. She let herself into the Clocktower apartment and went straight to the bathroom, staring at the confirmed test wand in shock. She set it down on the sink and quickly peeled the wrapper off a brand new pregnancy test that she’d picked up from the hospital pharmacy, along with her prescribed vitamins. Chloe Sullivan-Queen was nothing if not thorough, and right now, she desperately needed second- no, third opinion on this pregnancy thing. Fourth, even, since she’d had two tests in the hospital, and there were two wands in the new box.
She did the necessaries without wasting too much time. Once she was done, she sat on the toilet and waited.
Of course, having children was something she and Oliver had discussed at length, and she’d expected to become a mother at some point…but right now? She had no doubt that her husband was ready to be a father, but finding herself pregnant and with a fast-approaching deadline to parenthood was making her very nervous indeed. Three months were already gone; pretty soon, she'd be in her second trimester.
She drummed her fingers nervously and picked up the two new wands. As expected, they confirmed what she already knew: she was pregnant.
She rested a hand on her belly and stared down at herself in wonder. Oliver’s baby was growing in her womb; a product of a loving union of their bodies and souls.
Inexplicable joy spread through her, permeating every cell, and her eyes welled up with happy tears. She and Ollie were going to be parents. It was still a surprise, but a happy one, and she couldn’t wait to tell him.
A quick glance at her watch made her eyes widen. His plane would have landed by now, and he was likely already weaving his way through Metropolis traffic, heading home to her. Quickly she gathered up the two new test wands and exited the bathroom, determined to give Oliver a homecoming welcome he’d never forget.
