Coconut Creek -- A brief but sudden thunderstorm sparked lightning Wednesday night that killed one student and injured up to a dozen others on the field for a football game at Monarch High School.
Schaffner Noel, 15, of Coconut Creek, was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, said Coconut Creek police spokeswoman Judie Banks.
Rescue workers treated 10 people in the school gym, in addition to the three injured football players, according to police. A police officer and two coaches also were knocked down, witnesses said.
The incident occurred during a junior varsity game between Monarch High and Pompano Beach High School
