The air is tinted blue with cold when they wake under the naked branches of the trees. Massive, towering things, the trees glow like backlit x-rays in the gathering dark. The grass is brittle with the season, crackling with each step and movement--and there is movement, just past where the shadows get too thick for clear definitions. It comes and goes, fits and starts, clusters of shadows broken up by long periods of stillness.
In the clearing where they find themselves, there is a five-foot statue of a head. Frost coats the ground around it; the statue itself perspires with steam. The mist of it gathers in the statue’s broad, open mouth and spills out over the ground. Tendrils curl away from the bugging eyes. The stone is pale, glowing; darker shadows move underneath, like a fetus shifting beneath hardened skin. Every so often a dark swirl travels from top to bottom of the screaming statue, and pressure comes with it, swamping the clearing in a feeling of soundless noise.
