It had a been a few weeks since Danny Fenton had arrived at the barracks. Enough time to throw off suspicion at any sightings of Phantom, Danny hoped.  Even if it was suspicious, he simply couldn't risk holding off any longer to start patrols.  He needed to know his new surroundings.  He needed to be out there patrolling for trouble and keeping an ( Read more... )

Some time during Danny's patrol, the woods turn white around him. Which isn't to say the trees have turned white- the forest has just apparently vanished. Slipped into blankness like those old cartoons where the characters walked off the end of the scenery and into a spot the artist hadn't drawn.

Look out for that white wall you can't fly through in front of you, Danny.

If you can see it.

She gives another, longer growl and leaves a deep scratch on one side of his throat as she lets go. Her eyes seem to shift into translucency, with peachy scar tissue behind them, and her lips pull a little too wide. "Will it not? Very well. Then bring it a message from her."

Something was telling Danny that this would not end well. He winces as he feels the cut to the side of his neck and glares at her.

"Fine. Write a note or something and I'll play mailman."

Her voice drops back into a croon. "It will tell Burke that the Man with White Eyes wishes to see it, and will tell it of Tempest and the Fox. He will tell it, but only if the knight comes alone."

She smiles, and her teeth are too long and too sharp. "Does it understand?"

Danny crosses his arms stubbornly. "So you're telling me I have to go and tell Peter that you want him to walk straight into a trap. Fine. But I'm telling him my opinion that he should avoid the whole issue and not come too."

"It will come," she says, leaning back. "It will not be able to stop itself."

The room vanishes, and they're back in the woods, Danny still ankle-deep in the forest floor. "She does so hope the changling child will also come back again. Perhaps that time to share a drink?"

"Riight. You sound confident." Danny may or may not be already plotting to keep an invisible eye on this conference.

No one ever said being a superhero lead to making smart decisions.

"And don't hold your breath on that."

She laughs, light and silvery, and vanishes. Where she was standing, there's a small, ribbon-bound box with what looks like a tiny telescope nested inside.

It's not. Should he look through it while someone else is standing at the other end, he'll see them as they'd look dead - a few imaginary ghosts to keep him company.

....Great. Just great. Now he was stuck in the ground in the middle of the Woods with all of his ghost powers still shorted out.

Danny was really starting to hate that fruitloop.

He mutters insults at her as he starts pounding at the dirt around his ankles with the thermos.
