Two Big Milestones

Ryan's had two big milestones in the past week so I figured it was time for an update. I'm such a slacker!

Last Tuesday, Ryan transitioned to a big boy bed! We tossed around the idea while we were on vacation a couple weeks ago (since his feet now touch the end of the pack n' play and we had an extra bed in the room) but decided to wait until we were home. So, before his nap last Tuesday, I asked him if he wanted to be a big boy and sleep in a big boy bed. His face lit up . We went into his room and he watched while I took the side off his crib. I had to struggle to keep him from crawling in while I was putting the day-bed rail on. Afterward, he took his first big boy nap. He didn't fall out at all (the day-bed rail doesn't have a toddler rail). Tuesday night he did great again. Wednesday, though, he fell out once during his nap and then twice in the night. So, on Thursday, we went to Babies R Us and bought the ONLY rail that will fit his convertible crib. It would have been just as expensive to buy a toddler bed but we decided not to worry about storing the crib. He's been sleeping like a big boy ever since.

Today, Ryan went to his first movie-theater movie. The theater not far from our house does a Free Family Movie on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The movies are all older releases like Madagascar 2, Igor, Bee Movie, Horton Hears a Who. We went to see Kung Fu Panda. I was expecting it to be a little busy but wasn't expecting the day-care buses parked outside. We almost didn't go just because of the amount of people who were there. Fortunately, though, the management group is smart and uses the entire theater to cater to all the people it draws. There were 11 theaters playing movies - 1 was playing the feature from last week (Igor) and 2 were designated specifically for the day-care groups. The rest (8) were designated for the public. We actually got great seats (on one end) and managed to get some kiddy boosters for the seats (since the stadium seats eat small children). Ryan sat in my lap for the first five minutes or so but quickly adjusted to the theater experience. He sat in his own seat from then on and only got distracted/antsy three or four times. None of the times were enough to warrant leaving the theater. About ten minutes to the end, Angie (who told Rachel she wanted to leave about ten minutes into the movie, I later found out) decided she was done and started crying. So Rachel took her out while I stayed with Ryan and Caleb (who was sleeping in his infant carrier). After Angie left, Ryan got extremely antsy. He was up and down out of the seat asking where Angie went. About two minutes from the end, he started to lose it a little. Fortunately, I managed to settle him down enough to not have to leave. I didn't know how in the world I was going to get him, all the stuff, AND Caleb all at the same time (thus where I realized I'm DEFINITELY not ready for another kid.. lol). The lady in front of us seemed a little annoyed that I didn't take him out but really...WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? IT'S A FREE FAMILY MOVIE! And, besides, he did wonderfully up until that point. Not perfect, obviously, but far better than I imagined he would. Of course, she might have just been annoyed at her own kid. I couldn't really tell. :oP I'm kicking myself for not taking any pictures.

So, there you have it. Two big milestones in one week. I guess I could make this a really long post and put some pictures up from our vacation a couple weeks ago. Eh. Why not.

Traveling in style. This is what he looked like most of the way down and most of the way back. Fortunately, he was sweet and napped in the car too.

His first Friendly's meal - grilled cheese, french fries, apple juice in a cup with a color-changing straw and a Cone Head Sundae. We ended up eating there 4 times throughout the week. It's one (and possibly the only) thing I miss about living up North.

His very first Cone Head Sundae. Where I come from, this is a rite of passage.

The Aftermath

The following day at the beach. Disregard the fat woman, please. That's what happens when you eat too much Friendly's (and McDonald's and Arby's and Chick-Fil-A, etc, etc...)

Sitting in the shade looking cool.

Almost looks like a baby still in this pic!

Playing in the sand is SERIOUS business.

Pouring the water in from the water pail just like Daddy showed him.

Learning what a shell was (and the word for it) for the first time.

Throwing sand at Daddy. We taught Ryan not to throw sand after this, of course, but Daddy really deserved it since he was burying The Boy's feet.

Splashing Mommy in the kiddie pool later that first evening.

Crazy kid.

In his tube at the indoor kiddie pool the following morning before the guy came to turn on the mushroom water feature (which Ryan hated).

He thought it was a hoot that he could swim around in it by himself.

He also liked pushing it around.

And wearing it like a hat with Dada.

This is what I get to live with each day. :)

At the Ripley's Aquarium; right before he completely flipped out about being too close to the glass.

Looking at the fish and squirming around DESPERATELY to get down (he kept running away).

Ryan's favorite part of the aquarium - a little corner where they talk about the pipelines and water that keep up the aquarium exhibits. He played cars for a good twenty minutes before I literally dragged him kicking and screaming away.

Going down the scary fish slide with Will (our friend Amanda's nephew).

Stuck in the stroller at the end.

Playing in the sand again on our last day at the beach.

Asleep in the car on the way home. Right before I grabbed the camera to catch a picture, he had been smiling in his sleep. I think he had a good time. ;)

beach pictures, milestones
