[essay] Lambo, the Future, and Updating
SO. Yamamoto's essay made ME want to essay on the Future re: Lambo. Because you can miss a whole lot of stuff if you aren't paying close attention to what people say, and this plays into how I play Adult!Lambo.
The Future
Adult Lambo never talks about the future in detail, or even at all. To me, this is something that stuck out a little later on in the Daily arc, but never paid attention to until recently. Which - up until the Rings Arc - wasn't really important! There wasn't anything going on that they needed any information or help, and with Mukuro, Lambo did show up and help out at one point, but. Never made mention of it beforehand! You would think that someone with the power to time travel for five minutes would use that time wisely, warn his family and friends about this and that, and make sure something was done to change it, right? WRONG. Adult!Lambo, like I said, never mentions things about the future. He's appears, he gets abused/does something, and goes back! Then we hit the Rings arc.
This battle is the most important battle the Vongola have ever been in up until this point. They're lives are at stake, XANXUS is a crazy mofo who wants to kill them, and well. Tsuna is understandably freaking out about all of it and at this point, freaked out that a five year old is going to fight a skilled assassin. So when Adult!Lambo appears in his kitchen the night before the Thunder battle, they discuss the battle, and Lambo tells Tsuna that he received a memo and the half-Vongola ring a week before (as well as a set of horns, that we learn belong to 20yl!Lambo). Tsuna is still understandably worried and asks him to take his younger version's place. Lambo points out that, if his younger version dies in tomorrows battle, that he wouldn't be there! Which cheers Tsuna up a bit. Except . . .Lambo says it isn't that exactly.
Then he drops a BOMBSHELL. Lambo says that he has no memory of the Ring battles, and that even his boss had never mentioned it. And that maybe he comes from a future where there never was a battle for the Rings! ("I don't have any memory of the scramble battle for the Rings. I've never even heard about it from my boss. Maybe I come from a world 10 years later where there was no scramble battle for the Rings. It's something called a parallel world. And they say the future can change. If the child version from me is killed tomorrow, then the me from 10 years later won't appear in this world ever again.") So now we can have multiple futures and multiple worlds. Or parallel worlds, as he put it. Like Yamamoto mentioned in her essay, these various worlds and futures are built of the decisions made in the past. So! This would explain why Lambo has no idea about the battles except what he learned in the past because he never fought for the Thunder ring. Then he tells Tsuna to tell his younger self not to use the bazooka because he doesn't want to dielololo
And then the battle itself happens, and we get to meet 20 Years Later Lambo, who . . . says some curious things! "To be able to see you all again . . . it makes one nostalgic . . . all these familiar long ago faces. It makes one want to cry." I think this hints that 20yl!Lambo may come from the Future Arc timeline or - one similar like it. And comparing it to 10yl!Lambo's first appearance where he doesn't . . . really seem surprised to see Tsuna ("Long time no see, Vongola Tenth" o someone used the tyl bazooka lol) I think it's a big tip-off that SOMETHING happened in 20yl!Lambo's timeline to the Vongola family, and that this something HASN'T happened to tyl!Lambo.
What that is? WHO KNOWS. It could be the events of the Future Arc, it could be something completely different! Amano is a cocktease that way. And Iiiii cannot confirm or deny any of this, because it's all mostly theory. BUT IT IS SOMETHING.
Lambo and "Not Updating"
Which brings me to this. The Reborn cast recently updated to the Future Arc! Lambo has updated as well, but. It's not as noticeable/important as Tsuna or Gokudera or Yamamoto, because he's still five years old. So if asked, he'll probably have no idea what you're talking about. Or maybe he'll mention seeing lots of boobs or FUUTA IS BIG :O :O :O or Reborn's funny outfit, who knows. Until Lambo appears again and does something, at least.
As for Adult Lambo? He has no idea this is going on. The young Vongola family, 10 years in the future? AMAZING but he has no memory of this ever happening. Because that isn't his future! We learn that in the Future arc, the Vongola rings have been destroyed. We learn from Lambo that the scramble battle for the rings never happened. WHICH IS REALLY FUCKING CONFUSING but just goes to prove what Lambo said about parallel worlds and futures. There is no possible way that he is from the future that Tsuna and everyone are fighting against.
So for all intent and purposes? Lambo is IN THE DARK about the future arc until someone tells him about it. Hell, for all he knows, absolutely nothing is going on the young Vongola family are enjoying their vacation in camp.
