Oversantized world=more allergies

I guess a lot has changed since I was growing up. If a cookie fell on the carpet and wasn't too fuzzy when we picked it back up, we ate it. We didn't see antibacterial soap outside of the hospital. We got cuts and scrapes and washed them off with warm water,soap and sometimes hydrogen peroxide. People had allergies, but they seemed to be allergic ( Read more... )

Turns out I'm allergic to housework. See, not all allergies are detrimental.

Just flipping through the journal, friend of Juliel's... I agree with your theory on our over sanitized world making us sick, but I just wanted to mention that a gluten allergy (or Celiac disease) is actually a very very old allergy. They just didn't understand it or know how to diagnose it until 15 to 20 years ago. My mom has been living with it now for... At least ten years? Turns out that it has 2 causes - one is a genetic predisposition for it - which is how they know that it's an old allergy, and the second is a developed allergy. Either way, it can "hide" in your system for years before it rears it's ugly head.

Just thought I'd mention that :)
