I second that comment. I had the same problem with my kids too. I just let them cry and it was amazing how quickly they learn to lay/fall down and go to sleep!
**it is amazing how quickly they learn that you will come in to check on them when they stand up and cry from being stuck! They are way smarter than we give them credit for! Cute lil stinkers!!
When my son went through this phase, I had to teach him to sit down. During the day, I kept standing him up, then held out my hands to catch him, or put a load of cushions on the floor around him. At first he 'fell' down, but as he landed on cushions he didn't get hurt. Eventually he started sitting himself down again. This didn't take long, a week or two at most. I never had to smack him to teach him not to stand up, all he needed was to learn how to get down again. Now that I know he is capable of getting himself down safely, if I put him to bed and he stands up, I just say "Goodnight, have a nice sleep" and leave the room as usual.
