Allowence

So lately Phoebe who just turned three has taken a bigger interest in keeping money in one of my old purses and so I have been rewarding her with  a nickle or dime or quarter here and there when she picks up her toys or  putting her clothes in the hamper. But where she is so young I was wondering if it was the right thing to do to give her money ( Read more... )

That's so funny! I've been debating the very same thing for my 3 year old. He'll ask for a new car or something at the store and lately I've been telling him that he has to do work and earn money to buy it just like daddy does when he goes to work. But like you, I wasn't sure if I wanted to "pay" him for doing work that I (will eventually) expect him to do anyway. The other day he helped me pick up sticks and rocks in the yard and I gave him a dollar to buy a new hot wheel car. It worked great! I'm just not sure I'm willing to pay him every day when it comes time to pick up his toys!

The reason I'm having such a hard time with this is because being the youngest of six children I always had older sisters to do work for me and then when I got to be a teenager and wanted money I was really quite annoyed when my mom would want me to work for it. Looking back I see she was trying to teach me the value of a dollar but I wish she had started sooner rather than later. On the other hand I can see that maybe my sisters did everything so that they could earn money. Anywho I think as she gets older and has more chores I'll give her a weekly allowence but for right now a few pennies to make clean up go by faster really won't hurt much. At least I hope.
