Does anyone else get depressed as hell when they think about overpopulation?

Because I'm having a major emo moment, right now.

Not at all. Discussion is more cathartic than anything else, really.

I dunno. I recently read a book called "The World Without Us" which revolved around the premise of how the earth would bounce back if we just vanished, simultaniously, like, tomorrow, and since then I've just really been thinking. I mean...I like living and everything, but at the rate we eat and waste shit it really fucks us and the environment over. At the same time, it's not like you can FORCE families to only have, like, one or two kids. Too much philosophy and free will stuff going on.

So I dunno. I enjoy being what and who I am, but at the same time I look at what my species has done (and what I do, for that matter), and I just think that we have the tendency to be more of a virus on this planet than anything else. And sometimes that bothers me.

But yahyah. Being a human with opposable digits and a working brain is nice, so...DX

No.

I get depressed thinking about politics. :D Like how candidates are blasted for being disingenuous, but any display of real humanity from them is analyzed and ridiculed.

Or, you know, just wondering where my life is going and why I'm so hesitant to effect change within it.

But at least we have cookies.

Those cookies made my stomach and yours truly happy.

Might designate you food-happiness lady from now on.

But in all seriousness: I completely and utterly agree with you. In all respects of your statement.

The whole concept of overpopulation really terrifies me. I mean, while I understand that the Baby Boomers and the Gen X generation are working to help solve the problem, I also think that my generation- the iGeneration, if you will, has a large part to play in this. I think that our society promotes sex way too much, and mocks the idea of chastity and virginity. I think that these are large factors that are helping the overpopulation crisis we have.

But then again, I'm probably wrong.

This may be true, but in developed countries the birth rate is actually going down. It's actually rare for people to have sex unprotected, and most women wait until 30+ before they have kids. And once you hit that age, it's not like you really have the option of pumping out more than a couple kids. :T

I don't think overpopulation is the big issue here, though it might be a important one. The overlying problem is that people just can't seem to live sustainably. Green options are really beginning to get promoted, but another problem (I think) is the capitalist industries trying to make an extra buck or two off people who are genuinely concerned. Looking at the organic food section in the grocery store depresses me 'cause everything's so pricey. It's simply too expensive for the average person to live by.

Not to mention that some people are just so damn lazy; this summer I visited a friend in the US and it absolutely horrified me to see them throwing all their cans and shit into the trash. Their explanation was that the nearest depot was pretty far away, so they couldn't be bothered. (Said family also has at least one vehicle per person in the household...)

It's the lifestyle that has to change, but unfortunately most North Americans don't want to do something that'll disrupt their comfort. What a disgusting society of waste.
