“Hyung…?”
I didn’t answer.
“Hyung---“
He tugged on my sleeve.
“HYUUUUUUNG?!!?!”
“What Siwon?” I finally turned to see him jumping up and down in anxiety.
“Hangeng-hyung, I need to go to the bathroom.” he whispered to me, and I just blinked at him.
“Well then go to the bathroom Siwon…”
His eyes widened in bewilderment. “By MYSELF?!?! But…but I don’t want to be alone! Come with me…please??” he pleaded, gazing up at me with desperate eyes.
We were here with our mothers at the grocery store…I guessed it wouldn’t be a good idea for my eight year old friend to go wandering off by himself in a public place. He’d probably get lost before he could even find the bathroom.
I sighed. “Alright Siwon, but stay close to me, ok?” He nodded.
“Ma! I’m going to take Siwon to the bathroom. We’ll be back soon, ok?” I called to my mother, and she nodded and gave us a wave of approval.
Being eleven years old, I took it as my responsibility to watch over Siwon, since he was three years younger…unfortunately, this included accompanying him to places that he couldn’t go to alone…

Oh well…

Taking his small hand in mine, I led the way for him.
‘Why do public bathrooms always have to be so creepy??’ I asked myself as I pulled Siwon along down the narrow hallway down which the bathroom was located. The light was dim, and the walls were bathed in an eerie, yellow glow. I tried not to shudder as Siwon and I walked through the door. At least the bathroom itself was clean…
“Well then? Go ahead, Siwon.”
He tugged on my sleeve again. “Hyung, I need to use the toilet…” he said, pointing to the single stall standing aside from the urinals.
“Alright then…I’ll just wait out here.”
“You…you won’t leave me, will you?” his eyes grew wide in fear.
“Siwon, why would I ever leave you? Just do what you have to and I’ll be right here.”
“Ok.” He nodded and entered the stall, and I heard the lock as it slid into place.

………

Several minutes passed without so much as a sound from Siwon.
“Siwon-ah…are you ok in there? Siwon…? SIWON?!!?!” I knocked on the door frantically.
“Hangeng-hyung…I think I need your help…” he called wearily from within.
“Help with WHAT?”
“…I’m stuck…” he confessed miserably.
“You’re---?!! Hang on, I’ll be right there!” I eyed the space between the bottom of the stall door and the floor of the bathroom uncomfortably, but I had no choice. I slipped under…and found Siwon sitting there; his pants were around his ankles and his feet dangled in the air, unable to reach the floor. He was clinging onto the toilet paper holder, trying desperately to dislodge himself from the trap that he had fallen into.
“Hyung…I don’t feel like going to bathroom anymore…” he said, and I sighed, shaking my head.
“Here…let me help you…” With my arms around him, I heaved him up and helped him back to his feet.
“I don’t think I like public bathrooms anymore…” he said as we washed our hands, and I smiled.
“Come on…let’s get out of here.”
Hand in hand, we found our way back to our mothers, and decided not to mention this little incident.

**when I first saw the word ‘Bathroom’, I couldn’t think of anything but dirty thoughts…am I the only one?
