This is probably an improvement, Gilbert thinks, from when he first returned. Looking Break in the eye was almost out of the question for a week. He needed that time to convince himself that there's nothing that he can do right now - to remind himself that when he returns, it's likely no time will have passed and he'll be ready. He's been trying to keep remembering ever since.
What he needs now, he's decided, is to be chained to this wall and made to stop worrying so damn much for a short while. He's still not entirely convinced that it's normal to want this, but - as worrying as it secretly is, he doesn't think ignoring it is the answer, either. No. He...thinks he might finally have had a little too much of ignoring things that need to be acknowledged.
(Most people would argue that letting Xerxes Break chain you to a wall and giving him permission to get creative isn't the solution to most problems, either, but maybe that's another change entirely.)
"It's...my word is still 'saffron'," he says quietly. He pulls a little at the manacles about his wrists, assuring himself of their security.
