So a strange thing happened at Bar Sinister last week. I show up and someone bought me a drink, a Kettle One and 7-Up my usual. So I take a sip and it tastes horrible. Since I didn't buy the drink I didn’t want to say anything thinking perhaps I didn't get Kettle One but Popov instead. Also I had a bit of a cold so I thought maybe my taste was ( Read more... )

Well, on the plus side, there's probably nothing living in it... Funny tastes in most comestibles would point to bad bacteria - I can't imagine anything living through a stay in a vodka bottle, no matter how craptastic it tasted.

that is totally weird.

but not unheard of.

BTW - bars do not pay any where near shelf price for a bottle of anything.

the mark-up on alcohol is insane.

Back when I was a bartender I was good friends with a guy who owned a small gay bar in ventura and he used to give me Bombay Sapphire for $3.00 a drink (or shot) because he said he could still make money since he barely paid anything for the bottle in the first place. I think it was something like 15 - 20 for a larger than they sell in markets bottle of what is considered top shelf gin.

I can only imagine what they pay for the cheap stuff.
