One could argue that the thing that is "wrong" with any of us is what makes us us.

Sounds cliche, I know. But if you think about it, it's the differences that distinguish us, not the similarities.

Best of luck to your niece.

Braces - check
Glasses and contacts - check
Surgeries (dental) - check
Brain chemistry medication - check

Yep, somethings wrong with me too. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it. ;-)

I never understood the alleged stigma myself.

Some people's bodies don't produce enough insulin, so they take medication or injections to supplement the insulin and allow their bodies to function optimally.

Some people's bodies don't make enough seratonin, so we have SSRIs that help increase the level of seratonin in their brains to help them function optimally.

I see no difference between either of those situations, or any reason why one should feel "wrong" because their body needs maintenance or attention in some way to function optimally. The human body is what it is, if your car was leaking oil you wouldn't ignore the issue and wait for the engine to seize. You fix the leak and go on your merry way. Then ta-da, there's no longer anything 'wrong' with the car. :) Same applies to taking care of your body IMO.
