Buddhism

So I've been reading a book about Buddhism. I'm interested in Buddhism from an academic point of view. The book goes through the history of Siddhartha Gautama, the conversions of the major Asian countries, and how Buddhism has come to the West. That's where I am now ( Read more... )

I feel the exact same way about Buddhism. That quote (the concept, anyway) is exactly what attracted me to it. My senior year of high school,I read "Siddhartha" by Herman Hesse, the story of the story of his life and search for meaning. A lot of what I'm going through right now, actually. I think if I could, I would also wander out in to the woods for years. Ever since reading it I have been very interested in it. I've been to several Buddhist temples and found it some of the most relaxing and beautiful feelings I've ever experienced.
I'm taking a history of ancient east Asia coarse now and am LOVING to read about the history of the religion.
What is the name/ author of the book you're reading?

It is "The Vision of the Buddha: Buddhism - The Path to Spiritual Enlightenment" by Tom Lowenstein. I'll try to bring it with me next weekend.

The next book I have in the pipe to read, which I will start tonight or tomorrow is "The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Afterwards I'm probably going to read "Siddhartha" again. I picked up a hardcover copy at Barnes and Noble for $3.

FYI Andy in case you are interested, there are many moral and ethical codes that come pre-packaged with canned deities, and Judaism is one of them.

I also have similar views on Buddhism. It's really the only religion that I can relate to.

Zen teachings have been likened to a finger pointing at the moon. To see the moon, you must stop looking at the finger.

Here it is, right now. If you start thinking about it, you miss it.

Moment after moment, everything comes out of nothingness. This is the true joy of life.
