Book Plea...

Well, beverly cleary is usually a good place to start for girls of that age. There's not a lot of "classics" suited to girls that aren't dreadfully long and/or boring. Anne of green Gabes is one of my favorites, but I couldn't even get into the book until 7th/8th grade. The Mixed of Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is good.

What is the Mixed Files book about?

Beverly Cleary is tried and true... good thought.

I know... what is up with craptastic young chic-lit?

Mixed up files is about a girl who decides to run away (with her brother) and live in the museum. and it's about how they hide out from the museum gaurds and explore the treasures (I think it's the MET), and there's mysteries to be solved, etc. Vale recently read it in school and enjoyed it as well, but the main character is a girl, so that's why I suggested it.

this site has lots of reviews and lists. there's also a section for starting a reading group. i used to do this for a living and i'd have been able to do you better in the olden days, but i've been out of the public library youth dept since '97. hope this helps~*

I second the Beverly Cleary suggestion. I grew up on the Ramona series and loved her.

Also, the Lemony Snickett series is right around that age group.
