As a favor to Souji, Naoto begins to investigate the death of Nanako-chan's mother... only to discover that there was never any such car accident. The folder that Dojima-san obsesses over is full of random newspaper clippings. And while Naoto can find plenty of people who remember Nanako's mother, she can't find any record of her life, let alone her death.

Who... or, rather, What... was Nanako-chan's mother?

Interlude 19 [1a] - Naoto anonymous June 24 2009, 00:00:27 UTC
A brief introduction - these interludes, a collaboration between anon and anon, are a portion of a larger fanfic (which will render both anons slightly less anon) with framing scenes and a few extra bits added. We post this here in hopes that they might be found suitable as a fill, and for everyone's enjoyment.

2012"It's... good to see you again, Shirogane." Detective Dojima looked uncomfortable, but his words were genuine. He was perched on the edge of his chair, one hand resting on an old and beaten file folder that looked as if it had gone to Hell and back several times over. "Can I get you something to drink? Some coffee, or ( ... )

One of the first tricks she had learned from her grandfather was taking in information without trying to process it, to store a memory of what was written to be called back at a later time. That was what she had been doing, internalizing the words and saving them for later. But her lack of understanding of the German article forced her out of the trance, and she began to scan the other articles on the page with increasing fixation ( ... )

Interlude 19 [2] - Ryotaro anonymous June 24 2009, 00:12:17 UTC
1991Ryotaro Dojima stared at the young woman across from him incredulously. He was only twenty-two, and a mere beat cop at that, but he knew when someone wasn't telling the truth. The woman's light brown hair was straggly and unkempt, and despite what seemed to be her best efforts, her eyes darted around nervously. Her story about being from Tokyo was holding less and less water ( ... )

One balmy summer evening, Dojima was working late, scouring over a newspaper article about a strange occurance in Chichibu that had happened the week before. Apparently someone had found an American Robin - one with a blue belly instead of red, at that - at the train station around the same day that Chisato had showed up on the police's doorstep. "It was just flitting around," a witness had said. "These birds are not native to Japan. Perhaps it was owned illegally, or had been a stowaway on a plane." Highly unlikely, Dojima thought, and rubbed his temples. Why the hell am I here, reading stories about weird birds ( ... )

They were married three years later. He'd hedged and waited as long as he could to satisfy his curiosity, until neither of them could stand the wait any longer. The only people who showed up at the wedding were Dojima's sister and her infant son, Souji. He wasn't surprised - in fact, if someone from the bride's side had shown, he would have been flabbergasted ( ... )

Eventually the delirium trickled down and stopped. After about two weeks of raving, she sat up again, and begin eating normally. Her swollen ankles receded, and she was able to go thorugh short, supervised walks around the neighborhood ( ... )

Chisato Dojima strolled down the Samegawa Flood Plain in Inaba. It was one of those sparkling days in September, one of the cloudless, crisp ones that make you want to get down on your knees and thank God. There was a gentle wind blowing, only enough to cause her straight, light brown hair to ripple slightly ( ... )

Chisato turned on her heel and vaulted over the Samegawa fence, her years of self-taught Japanese female grace crushed by her own self-preservation instinct. Her high heels flew off and the hem of her skirt tore - this'll be a good one to explain to Ryotaro, she thought distantly - as she landed on the ground and broke out into a full sprint, making for the riverbed ( ... )

Chisato took off yet again. She figured that the car would stay stuck between the rock wall and the slope leading down to the river, so she counted on a head start. It's so much easier to run without these heels, she thought. Go, girl - keep that 50-yard-dash record you set back then at Grand Rapids High. Run, run ( ... )
