“I guess I won’t be here for a while after you leave,” said Yosuke, as they settled down in Souji’s room at the Dojima residence for the last time. He took a seat on the couch by the window, and Souji sat atop a small pile of boxes, numbering more than he’d had when he moved in (but how could he throw away the model robot, or all those books from Yomenaido, or Nanako’s myriad gifts from acing his exams, or ( ... )

Yosuke buried his head in his arms, driving his forehead against his knees and apparently trying to disappear entirely. A guilty feeling gnawed away at Souji’s stomach. So that was it after all.

“Yosuke, it’s not that far away. I’ll be coming back to visit, I promise. And college is only a year away now … Who knows where we might end up?”

Yosuke groaned into his uniform. “Dude, you’re doing that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“That thing! That’s the sort of stuff you say to girls when you’re breaking up with them. You always do that ( ... )

Yosuke’s eyes opened, slowly. “I don’t remember anything after that. But I remember how selfish I felt, right then. I remember falling, I remember seeing you - and then I remember thinking it was the last time I’d see you. And then I remember regretting it.”

Souji couldn’t think of anything to say. They sat together in silence for a moment, before Yosuke found the nerve to continue.

“But, I woke up. I came back, and everything was okay again. Except … you’re still leaving. And I still feel selfish because … I don’t want you to.”

“Yosuke,” Souji turned to him, and wouldn’t continue until Yosuke grudgingly met his eyes. “Nothing’s going to happen to me. I promise I’ll be careful. I’ll come back during Golden Week, and summer vacation, and …”

But Yosuke was shaking his head again. “No. That’s not good enough.”

“Come on, Yosuke. You’re making this difficult.”

“No, you’re making this difficult! How terrible would it be to stay here with everybody, with all of your friends and your family and…!” Yosuke clamped his mouth shut, and ( ... )

He knew when Yosuke was going to cry; he’d seen it before. His eyebrows furrowed and his lips tightened, his Adam’s apple bobbed and he blinked too much. If that’s what eventually happened, Souji never knew, for all Yosuke said was, “Yeah, so do I”, and then nothing else as he pulled away, sliding down the shingled roof until he could drop the rest of the way to the softening spring ground ( ... )
