The absolute blackness on the other side of the curtains bespoke the late hour, but Adachi couldn't sleep. He closed his eyes and pressed his face against Dojima's back, breathing in the older man's scent, but the sweet release of unconsciousness evaded him.

The problem was that he couldn't stop thinking. His body felt tired, but his mind was whirring away at 120 kilometers an hour, calculating and recalculating all the moves he'd made in the elaborate game of chess that he'd been playing ever since he came to Inaba (those kids suspect me does Dojima know then why does he keep looking at me like that oh god please all I want is--). But then again, his exile here hadn't been the true beginning. That was when the insomnia had started, certainly, only growing worse after he discovered his power, pushed Mayumi Yamano into the TV, did the same to Saki Konishi. Ultimately, though, that had not been the catalyst.

She was the catalyst. Hazuki Kobayashi. The name tasted like acid in his mouth, her innocent smile seared the darkness ( ... )

It would have been stupid to assume that she didn't notice him watching her. She was smarter than most women Adachi had known, more astute, quicker on the uptake; that was just the kind of person you had to be if you were a police officer, even moreso if you were a detective. It wasn't as though he was trying to be discreet about it, either (I should have been would have been easier to take her by surprise and--). He wasn't stupid either, so he noticed when she started to avoid him, walking as far away as possible when they passed each other in the hall, excusing herself whenever he came into the break room, putting a new line of framed pictures on her desk in an attempt to build a wall between them. They'd never worked on a case together, never so much as held a conversation, but Adachi couldn't help but feel jilted, scorned (that stupid bitch how dare she if only then maybe I wouldn't--). Yet even in the midst of her rejection, he still found her unbearably attractive. His erotic thoughts of her turned more violent; she ( ... )

His desire was overflowing, drowning out his cowardice, his doubt. He started walking forward again, reached out his arms to rest his palms on the filing cabinet, one on each side of her head. She hadn't expected this, tried to get away at the last second, but was trapped. "You're so beautiful, Hazu-cha-- no, I'm sorry, Kobayashi-san." He leaned his face closer to hers, and he could feel her breath on his skin. "I didn't know they let such beautiful women work for the police department, until I met you." He licked his lips, and the fear in her eyes only made him want her more. "It's a liability ( ... )

Oh, authornon. Are you me, or are you just psychic?

This paints such an amazing picture of Adachi's mentality when it comes to these women for whom he develops such an infatuation. Your Adachi is really not an evil person, and that falls very much in line with how I've seen him up to this point: it's not that he doesn't try to reach out to other people and form social bonds, it's just that he... really sucks at it. I especially love seeing the gradual progression of his fantasies as they turn from lusty to angry and violent as his desires are frustrated--like he's been denied something that he was entitled to, which I suspect given Adachi's various ugly attitudes about women he might really believe. |D ( ... )

This comment made my day, OP. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Personally I feel that Adachi's relationship with Dojima is twofold. On the one hand, he feels that becoming close to his partner in a physical sense provides a good cover and keeps Dojima from suspecting him in the case. He sees Dojima as emotionally vulnerable and takes advantage of it. But what grows out of that is a personal attachment that he's never been able to attain with a woman (Mayumi, Saki, the woman in my story, probably many others), if that makes sense.

Adachi's such a fun character to explore, so I was really grateful for your prompt. ♥

word, but I would consider a dude like him to be evil. (I'm a lady, so my thinking on this is colored by that.)

STILL, this bit is EXACTLY what I had in mind, too! He's a freakin' sicko, and yet the sickness is morbidly attractive. I find Adachi getting off to his own rape fantasy hot... and I thank you for writing it. ;)

Ahaha, well... I guess it is a little evil, in a sense, but I guess I saw him less as a total demon and more as a sick individual who's been poisoned by certain societal attitudes. |D I don't think that excuses his behavior, mind you, but it makes it less aimlessly sinister to me.

...but I always wanted to read this, too. ♥ I had something very similar in mind, but I'm glad you filled it first! It's totally brills, and really hot and I also like reading the evolution of Adachi's fantasies. He is one sick cookie. XD

Thank you for filling!
