Kanji sat at a bench in the Junes food court, alternately scowling and crunching animal crackers. Man, he hated exams. Spending a week stuck in a classroom all day, looking at papers filled with pointless questions - and spending a month before that feeling all stressed out trying to make himself study. Kanji knew he wasn't stupid, but he wasn't book smart; he guessed there really wasn't such a thing as kicking-shadow-ass smart though. Or better yet, sewing-stuffed-toys smart, which was really gonna win people over.

But he was dangerously close to being held back a year - again - unless he got halfway decent grades. At this rate, he was going to be in school till he was thirty; he couldn't think of much worse. Neither could Souji, apparently, because he'd insisted that Kanji be coached by one of the others this time round. Kanji had figured it was going to be one of the other senpai, since they'd done all this stuff last year, and decided he'd just blow it off - but then Souji had casually mentioned he'd chosen Naoto, like it was

She continued explaining to him, but Kanji was finding it more and more difficult to concentrate. Her voice was smooth, low in pitch for a girl, and it kind of settled into the back of his head. So he tried watching her lips move instead, brows furrowed, figuring it might help him focus - but it really didn't, because then he started thinking about a whole bunch of other very non-mathematical stuff, and

Dinner turned out to be six Topsicles: two purples in Kanji's left hand, three blues in his right, and one orange for Naoto. They'd walked down to the river bank, which was pretty empty this time of year; it wasn't really swimming weather. Just a couple of guys with fishing rods hanging around, and him and Naoto sitting on the rocks. Must've been warmer than he thought, because the Topsicles were already melting onto his hands. Maybe five had been a bad idea? He'd been trying to tackle it one hand at a time, but that just meant the other one got covered in neon juice
