It had been an innocent enough suggestion. At least, that's what Yosuke was thinking as he did a few stretches beside his best friend on the Samegawa river bank. After the last fight with Souji, it occurred to Yosuke that this wouldn't be such a bad way to hone their skills. It wouldn't be an all-out fist-fight like before, just a spar between friends to test their reflexes ( ... )

Their sparring continued like this for some time, both of them equally matched and giving as good as they got. The sky had turned a deep orange by the time they slowed down, turning to face each other. They were both sweaty and breathing hard, almost at their limit ( ... )

Souji sat up slowly, wincing a bit and rubbing his back before turning his unreadable gaze on Yosuke. That was all it took to get Yosuke's tongue working ( ... )

It was Yosuke that let go first and Souji let him lean back, looking over the river's surface as Yosuke hurriedly wiped at his eyes. They brushed the grass off their pants as they stood up, watching the remaining sliver of the sun go down. As the cicadas began to chirp, a hand reached out and brushed Souji's. He didn't hesitate in grasping it.

“...Thanks.”

A gentle squeeze to his hand was Souji's only response and Yosuke smiled. They definitely needed to spar more often.
