Adachi had always been so kind, so understanding, so good-natured. Dojima realized, as he numbly read over the letter Souji had sent him for what felt like the hundredth time, that he'd come to rely on that. It didn't matter that Adachi was over ten years his junior, and after a while, it didn't matter that Adachi was a man, either. Nanako had never fully recovered after her kidnapping at Namatame's hands, and it hadn't helped Dojima's state of mind when Souji--the boy who'd finally helped him get past his obsession with finding his dead wife's killer--had moved back in with his own parents.

Long story short, he'd been lonely and depressed. And Adachi had been so kind. So understanding. So very, very good-natured. Things had just happened from there.

It's been a long time, Uncle. How have you been? Good, I hope, because the reason I'm writing is because of the Namatame serial murder case. I know it's been nearly a year since that case was finally shut for good, but it's bothered me ever since then, and even now I can't help but run

He folded up the letter, mouth dry, and stuck it in his shirt pocket, sitting heavily down upon the couch with hands folded over his chin. Nanako had already gone to bed--it was early, only just past eight, but she got tired so very easily these days... Dojima sucked in a breath, then let it go in a heave before crossing the room to the phone and punching in a number he had called so many times that his fingers knew it by muscle memory. The dial tone rang once, twice

They both made it there by twenty-five. Dojima probably should have driven, but people were rarely out when the weather was like this, and he didn't want to drive right into a telephone pole or something. The walk helped clear his mind a little anyway, even if the fog clung to his skin like a viscous slime and made him feel unclean. He was just overreacting based on his new suspicions, anyway. His new irrational suspicions, he wanted to tell himself, except he was having trouble on that. Souji's letter at least hadn't repeated that nonsense about jumping into TVs he'd told him once upon a time down at the station, though Dojima hadn't missed his reference to it, but all the same

Eventually, he looked up again, expression blank. At one point, Dojima would have assumed it meant he was confused. Now, he thought he saw signs of someone maintaining a careful poker face. Was he imagining it?

"I'm... not sure I get what you're driving at, Ryotaro," he murmured, eyes sliding to the side in his more typical perturbed expression. "If I knew anything about what happened to Mayumi Yamano that night, don't you think I would've told someone?"

"Not if you were the one who killed her," Dojima said heavily, the words dropping around the two of them like a sarcophagus lid.

Adachi jolted back like he'd been struck with a taser. He sputtered, "Wh-what? Are you serious!? How could you say something like that!?"

"Just--humor me, okay?!" he snapped. "I don't--" He grimaced and calmed down a little. "I don't want to believe it's true. But I won't feel at ease until I know for sure

I'm liking it, anon! You've got a great handle on Dojima. Looking forward to seeing what sort of corner Adachi backs himself into...

Haha, thank you! I was actually really nervous about my Dojima, because this is the first time I've tried writing for him. I, uh, also recently learned that Adachi may have been assigned as Mayumi's guard?? (I may have misremembered it as "that's what Adachi said but he wasn't actually supposed to be there." If that's the case then uhhhhh this is an AU!!) All I remembered was that when Adachi approached Mayumi, she had no idea who he was, so, uh, yeah. I won't worry too much about an anonymous kinkmeme fill.

I already have the end planned out for this; I'm just not sure how, precisely, it's going to get there. Knowing how I want it to end is what inspired me to pick this fill up again, though, so keep watching, I guess!!

I really like what's written so far and how you put Adachi and Dojima in character.
