((Spoilers for Yumi's S-link.))

"I'm glad he's dead."

Shadows lie. They twist truths to the point of breaking, warping one's worst impulses, sinking their hooks into every last horrific, shameful thought they can find and dragging them out to the surface. Use them to give themselves substance, growing nastier with each tweak of the truth, each little distortion.

That's his current theory, anyway. Served him well, so far, though he hasn't seen fit to share it with his friends. The very existence of their shadow selves is a bit of a hot-button topic with everyone else, especially since he's never faced one of his very own. Doesn't feel right trotting out a hypothesis when he doesn't know firsthand what it's like to see the darkest facets of yourself given form.

And a voice.

"Took him long enough, didn't it? I was beginning to think the bastard was conning us again -- give him another month or two, and he'd make a miraculous recovery and we'd all go back to being a happy little familyThe lilt in her voice fades, shining eyes ( ... )

For the shadow currently shares the stage with her predecessor, circling with predatory grace, and he suspects that far more than the few knots binding Yumi's wrists and legs hold her there. Beside him, Chie quivers with the need to rush the stage; he's sure the others feel the same, they all do, but the shadow's sticking too close to her originator, and isn't giving them any opening to work with.

"I bet he caught something from her. That's why she didn't stick around -- she just didn't want to see what she's in for someday! Or maybe... maybe he cheated on her. Who knows how many women he's boffed, right?"

"S... stop it..."

"What?" Another surge of red accompanies another tirade, vicious words spat out like poison: "You know he was a total slutbag, remember? All he cared about was hitting any pretty bitch who'd spread her legs for him. Mom was starting to lose her looks, she wasn't worth sticking around for!" Abrupt shift to gentle blue, and the shadow turned her face away to whisper "And neither was I ( ... )

"He didn't give a damn about us. Not until he needed us -- heh. Need?" Purple suffuses sapphire just as a mocking lilt taints her once-wistful tone: "Yeah, I know just what he needed. He needed to make sure someone still cared about his sorry ass. He needed to tell himself that he still had someone twisted round his little finger! He needed--" a starburst of crimson, edged with firey oranges and golds "--to watch my mother make herself sick falling over herself trying to cater to his every whim!"

Blinding light behind her, she spreads her arms wide as if to embrace the bloody blaze -- it floods through spread fingers, blurs their silhouettes together until she and the girl she sprang from appear to be a single form, misshapen and frayed at the edges. Unfortunately, Teddie's glasses don't prove flare-proof; fortunately, the intensity ebbs away, cooling to dull waves of green and blue.

"...I'm so tired. I'm sick of it all. I'm tired of playing the 'dutiful daughter', giving up everything I want to look after them. Thank God ( ... )

The shadow trails off meaningfully, a tinge of crimson stains gold, and Yumi screams.

"No! You're..."

The audience tenses, expectantly -- Yukiko's the one who starts a warning, too late to make any difference: "Yumi, wait...!"

"You're not me!Silence follows. White light covers the stage -- then snuffs out of existence, plunging them into darkness. Before they can panic, or even react, a single spotlight pierces through, illuminating the giggling shadow. Her elegant gown billows outward, forming ever-expanding waves; dark energy crackles and sparks around her -- lightning arcs across her fingertips, and he makes a mental note to keep Teddie and Yosuke back ( ... )
