Just started reading this and I'm enjoying it. I only wish your chapters were longer; you characterize very nicely and your writing in general is very pleasant to read. It's the little things described that really make it. I'll be checking back for more!

[ooc; O-oh my, thank you to all the anon for their comments! Two parts today.]Adachi winces, sucking in air through gritted teeth, because for all his supposed bravado, he is scared of the most obvious consequences (pain, blood, corpses strung in suburban roofs) and not of the most devastating ones (guilt, responsibility, and living with a debt owed in lives.) Dojima sighs, eases his pressure on the plastic bag, and hears the ice inside crinkle in response. It is beginning to melt against his hand and Adachi’s face, but otherwise the air in Inaba in winter is cool ( ... )

As far as apples falling from the tree, Nanako says about the same thing. She comes to visit after work sometimes, and she’s still dressed for it, except through the course of the day, she’s shrugged off her jacket, and her collar’s become rumpled. Nanako has not gotten used to Adachi’s presence in her father’s house, but she has come to accept it - a lot like before, except not. She sits beside Dojima on the couch and reminds her father not to drink so much for his age, flipping channels with the remote control idly ( ... )

[As always, thanks for the feedback so much! Keeps me going. : ) ]

It is something he has always known, but Adachi has come to recognize with startling clarity that very few things in the world are free. Every morning, he locks the door after Dojima leaves, downs the rest of the man's coffee because he is too lazy to pour his own (and because there is a definite, set order to the mugs in the top cupboard on the left, and he's a little adverse to disturbing the row of perfectly unused and lined-up guest glasses), and glances at his lengthening list of debts. Day by day, they (it isn't just him) let it grow longer, and the numbers start piling up in his head like reasons to stay (to go).

One day, a Thursday, Dojima puts down his newspaper (weekend weather forecast: slightly cloudy, with a hint of evening showers), and shrugs on his jacket with a customary, "I'm out." Adachi takes a little longer than usual, standing by the backyard door, but eventually, he turns around and waves. When Dojima returns, he mutters a grouchy, " ( ... )

"Are you lost, sir?" Adachi lowers his head and finds a young man staring at him from five feet away. He looks like the young businessman type, early thirties at most, hair cut just over his eyes, and a sense of quiet composure in the way he stands and talks. There is something familiar about him, or perhaps about that age, when Adachi was still green, and thought he had his whole life ahead of him ( ... )
