There is something so absorbing and evocative about your writing, while still remaining very simple and restrained. This might be my favourite part yet.

“It’s not like how I remembered,” says Adachi, looking out the window as the scenery scrolls by, and he never has to raise his eyes to see the tops of buildings. The view is smudgy at best - the constant showers in Inaba makes washing a car a useless task, and all the windows are stained with the white streaks of rainfall. Dojima glances at the back of his head before looking to the road, assuming that he means the city. It is the first thing Adachi has said since getting into the car, the first sound he has made other than the click of the seatbelt sliding into the lock, and the occasional clink of coins sliding together in his pocket

Dojima presses his mouth into an unimpressed thin line. He is too old for this. Sitting down on the couch, he leans forward and hunches over, resting his elbows on his knees and rubbing his forehead, etching worry lines deeper into his skin. “Tell me next time you decide to leave,” he sighs, closing his eyes. He will not and cannot be a deterrent, but there is still a certain sense of protocol with even something like retreat. “And at least tear that stupid piece of paper down yourself.”

Crossing the floor, the cushions dip as Adachi seats himself next to his ex-partner, idly running his thumb across the softening bristles of the toothbrush. He leans back, resting his head on the top of the seat. It takes a moment, but he answers.

“Okay.”

Adachi does not leave for half a year.

Eventually, he fills up the entire length of the advertisement page, ink running well into the printed images and fine print at the bottom, until the writing was hardly legible, and starts a second, then third sheet (he begins grouping meals by bulk, rather than listing out every one individually.) Being sly, and a liar, he manages to work out a balance that keeps him from accruing too much debt in one day, between the chores (he refuses to touch the laundry), the stealing of pudding, and occasionally, rereading the files Dojima leaves at home, reviewing cases.

Some habits die harder than others.

The sense of normality is stifling. Twice he has left things on the front porch and simply turned around, walking away, but night falls and fog rolls in and he finds himself right where he started - flipping channels from seven to ten. “I want to leave,” he says on a Saturday night, still staring at the ten’ o’clock news without watching it (We’re seeing lowered prices in produce around the

Haha, I've been told that before. A friend told me she expected something EPIC but I'm not intense enough or that good enough of a writer, haha. A slow, subtle sort of closure hopefully suffices?

I like this. A lot. Maybe not redemption, precisely, nor apology, precisely, but keeping on living, and fitting into a space that nobody quite knew was empty until he filled it.

Author!anon thanks you so much! That's the sort of subtle compromise I was aiming for. (I don't think Adachi's a good enough person even at the core to fully redeem, but people work in strange ways, and like he said, they adapt.)

Great story, 10/10 indeed. I especially liked the line in chapter 9 about the 3 aces; lucky Adachi. Would love to read more Adachi + Dojima or Adachi/Dojima fics by you. Got any links?
