By late December the fog still hasn't lifted. Looking out the classroom window, Chie sees nothing but grey; like someone threw up a stone wall just beyond the glass.
She glances back at Yukiko, perched on a school desk, legs crossed and hands clasped in her lap. Delicate as always. Still needs a prince, still calls her as much. Chie wants to believe it, and could if she tried - but the truth is they haven't spoken properly in days. Haven't talked, haven't hugged, haven't curled around each other at night with their hands clasped tight beneath the covers. And when she looks at Yukiko - really looks at her - half the time it's her Shadow she sees, and there's a whisper in the back of her skull she can't ignore.
Yukiko walks over to her - yellow eyes, Chie thinks, then shakes her head and speaks. "You want to hang out after school?"
Yukiko shakes her head. "I'm going to see Souji."

After that, it's like watching a movie. In two steps she's beside the futon; she's shoving Yukiko down against the mattress; she's climbing on top, straddling her hips, lips pressing violently against her mouth. Yukiko struggles, but it's half-hearted. She pushes Chie up by the shoulders, looking her in the eye, and her expression is unreadable. "You never change, do you?" she mutters. "Prince."
Chie wants to know what the hell she means by that. Instead she pulls at Yukiko's top - and both their fingers fumble with the buttons. The material's over Yukiko's head and on the floor within moments.
"I'm never going to be as good as you," Yukiko whispers. What Chie hears is, And I hate you for it, and she grips Yukiko's upper arms hard enough to bruise. She's sick of life as an afterthought. Didn't even qualify for her own space inside the television; didn't have the mental strength to reshape the landscape. It's ( ... )
