He doesn’t know why he expected it to be different. Maybe because it was? He can remember every detail of his hurricane romance with Katherine -- if a romance is what it was at all, and that’s a thought he never allows himself to follow through, not sober, and he’s never drunk enough -- and this wasn’t that. In fact, if Katherine was a hurricane, Elena has been the ebbs and flows of a tide in a protected cove.

This is gorgeous. I really, really like it. Especially this part:

Because she is neither cruel nor stupid: she knows what she’s doing, and it kills her as much as it kills him, so he puts up with it.

Thanks! I've spent a ton of time thinking about this specific part of their relationship, so I sort of LOVED that prompt -- I've never applied that song to their relationship before, but it's so, so perfect. And that's exactly what I wanted "different" to do here. I'm an attorney (...student attorney), so everything has a tendency to come down to what things mean, and how that impacts everything else, so just -- the it is but it isn't is everywhere, and I feel like it's just the key part of this relationship. ANYWAY.
