Paul Cornell's a fine fellow

It's interesting to read Paul Cornell's commentary about Convergence - in a very real way, he makes it clear that it is the convention that I wanted Minicon to be, a decade or so ago.  He also makes it clear that the things we were squabbling about during the Late Unpleasantness were a matter of perception, not of fact - it was and is perfectly ( Read more... )

I found the "Rules/Fun" video hysterical on several levels.

I'll tell you, nothing I read about the Minicon "high resolution" thing makes me want to attend it. Though I'm sure it's changed a lot.

odd, I guess I have always seen them as omnisexual. The fact that this is colored by the perception of a bisexual female may be taken into account however. Robert does his best to promote an inclusive atmosphere for all the parties but since the party hosts actually run them it is sometimes hard to see where they fall down on the job. I would love to hear more from your perspective since I help run one of the parties and in no way want it to be offputting to any sexual preference.

(I do understand the whole Gother than you thing though.)

I may agree with you, Victor. From my view (over here, from a distance) it does look like their large glass of Blog is half-full. (Blog is Good, of course.)

One could even get the feeling that this CONvergence elephant is actually made up of large & sturdy half-full glasses of Blog. All The Way Down.

While true in retrospect, that was NOT the message being conveyed by the Gang of Ten at the time. *sigh* But that's old territory, and not where I want to go right now.

True. However, in the midst of everything else, the Gang of Ten completely missed (or thought irrelevant) the criticism that their plans would have an extraordinary negative backlash within the larger SF community in the Twin Cities and elsewhere.

In the proposal that Martin, Erik and myself made for Minicon 34, we weren't opposed to making the convention smaller. However, the route we suggested was for Minicon/MinnStf to spin-off some of the viable sub-fandom elements of the convention into their own conventions, over time. This would've created a constellation of "daughter" conventions, potentially, each with their own set of fans - and hopefully grateful to MinnStf for sponsoring them in the first place. The board decided to go with the Gang of Ten instead.
