I don't think it's the waistcoat that's the problem, but the shirt. Purple is certainly not a typical colour, especially when combined with a waistcoat.

I say you look like a smokin' hot Willy Wonka. Or a sultry Doctor Who.

I'm a sucker for men in suits and waistcoats so my opinion is biased. HOOOOTTTT <3

But it's the purple I think you're struggling with. It's too vibrant/bright; I think if you went with a deeper and darker purple, more into the indigo/blue range, you'd be alright. Right now the purple is too bright and plays a stark contrast against the tie, which is very light. Deepen the shirt color up and you'll be just dandy :) (or go much lighter -- you'd probably do rather well in a light blue or an eggshell)

I think the ensemble looks fantastic! Keep dressing like that!

Since you asked...

Plain purple shirt on it's own with tie? Yes, absolutely.

With vest? No. Purple is usually a colour a magician would wear as a cloak, so I see what your housemate means. A plain white shirt, or a lightly coloured shirt with fine stripes would work much better with that vest.

The really darkish hair lying flat like it is in this picture though is what lets you down i this photo. If it were styled better it would make you look younger and fresher. The ensemble (hair included) is all too dark and colourless, if you ask me, which is why yould should get a lighter coloure shirt.

Oh, and I love the unshaven look! Suits you :P
