“Here ya go, babe; home sweet home,” Dee said, guiding his car smoothly to the curb, braking gently so he wouldn’t jolt his partner. Just because the hospital had decided Ryo was well enough to be discharged didn’t mean he wasn’t still in pain. Hardly surprising after getting crushed under half a building a couple of days earlier.
Opening his eyes, Ryo peered out through the side window, taking in his surroundings. “This is your place, not mine.”
“Well duh! There’s an elevator here, somethin’ your buildin’ doesn’t have. I could take ya to your place, but you’d either haveta walk up three flights or I’d haveta carry ya, which I’d do, no question, but you’re not exactly a featherweight, plus I don’t think you’d find it very comfortable.”
“Oh, yes, I suppose you’re right. But what about Bikky?”
“I already arranged for the House Ape to stay with Carol and her aunt for a week or two, give ya time to heal. He’s been stayin’ there since the accident anyway; thought I already told ya that.”
“You probably did, but I was on morphine so…” Ryo trailed off with an apologetic smile.
Dee grinned back. “Yeah, been there. Things happen around ya but they kinda don’t stick in the mind. Everything gets sorta blurry; nothin’ seems important enough to hold onto. C’mon, let’s get ya inside and settled.”
The rest of the day passed in a bit of a blur for Ryo too. The drive from the hospital after lunch, and the trip up to the fourth floor in the rickety old elevator proved exhausting. Combined with the effects of the painkillers he’d been prescribed, falling asleep as soon as he was settled on Dee’s sofa was practically inevitable. Dee woke him for dinner and to take his meds, but then Ryo spent the rest of the evening napping in front of the TV.
Around nine thirty, Dee decided it was time they turned in, and Ryo didn’t argue. Despite having spent half the day asleep he still felt drained. While he might have preferred his own luxuriantly comfortable bed, Dee’s was still a lot softer than the one in the hospital, and he sank into it with a groan of relief, his battered and bruised body grateful to be lying on something that cradled him gently.
“Okay?” Dee asked, arranging the covers.
“Mmm. Thanks, Dee.”
“Anything for you, babe.” Dee slid into the bed beside him. “Just wake me if ya need anything.”
Dee reached to turn off the light on the nightstand, but Ryo stopped him. “Could you maybe leave it on?” He blushed beneath his bruises. “I’ve never been scared of the dark, but since being…”
“Buried alive?”
Ryo shuddered at Dee’s words. “Yeah, that. There was almost always a light on at the hospital, but when there wasn’t, it was like I was right back there with half a building on top of me.”
“No problem. I’ll leave it on as long as ya want.”
