It’s not even that Buffy doesn’t know how to share, because she does. She shares with her friends all the time, and she’s not being selfish, or jealous, it’s just… She’s only barely beginning to get her life back on track, and it’s not easy. Reconnecting with her friends, catching up on her schoolwork, trying to slot herself back into some semblance of normality. She’s even tentatively beginning to think about maybe, possibly, trying dating again in the not-too-distant future, and while all that’s going on, along comes Faith.
Another Slayer, Kendra’s replacement, and Faith is so much of everything Buffy isn’t right now, and maybe never was. She’s enthusiastic, sassy, confident, sexy, uninhibited, cheerfully regaling everyone with tales of her exploits, and Buffy’s friends love her. Even Giles is letting himself get sucked in, and now Faith is hitting on Scott! It’s too much, like Faith’s intent on stealing away everything Buffy has struggled to win, and okay, so she hasn’t said yes to Scott yet, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t considering it. She’s not quite ready, and now she might not get the chance to be. How is that fair?
Everyone expects her to be nice to the new Slayer in town, show her around, buddy up to her because they’re in the same line of work and Buffy has years of experience while Faith has only been active for a few months. Buffy’s trying, honestly she is. She invited Faith over for dinner, and she knows Faith is the guest, but does her mom have to fuss over the visitor and practically ignore her own daughter?
If Kendra hadn’t died, Faith wouldn’t be here now and Buffy’s life would still be her own, not in danger of being taken over by the cuckoo in the nest.
